A Local guy gave up this type of mechanic work about a year ago. His biggest issue was getting payed. Farmers calling him out, pleading with him to fix gear, and then fccking him from a height and saying he was too expensive.

He was charging 40/hr as far as i know.

Money, minimum wage for people to work on and be trained up on new machinery costing 100k in some cases is **** money. These days if you have half a brain mechanically you'll go to college and stay away from that ****e. Working with oil and grease. Poor manual handling. Bad back and joints. Oh yeah but I love tractors!
And a lad charging forty euro an hour is at nothing. Time he pays for van, tools, tax, insurance there's nothing left. 60e minimum for a good lad out on his own.

Main dealer mechanics are charged out at €45-55/hour here...expensive enough when you have to pay it!
Private mechanics charge €30-33/hour, but there’s never an issue getting paid.
I’ve a guy that comes in once a month to maintain lights etc for €14/hour...

It's not just mechanics though, how many people are doing apprenticeships now? In alot of trades there is a shortage.

Tax system here doesn't suit self employed. Half gone in tax. Then if sick or can't work you can't sign on so you have to protect yourself for loss of earnings.
Whelan2 is right thou I think listening to experts there is a shortage of trades people full stop after the most of them left during the crash

    Cant get paid

I have 3 machines in my way as I won't let them go until I get paid.

I lad is borrowing a tractor to fodder rather than have his own.

Tax is probably more severe here.

There’s four garages in the village and they’re all looking for mechanics with nearly two years. None available.

    That’s just awful.
The lads that don’t pay are probably the most demanding also.

Haha but not a chance the man will learn while he has a good neighbor like that.

It's no wonder it's the state it is in. The other side of it is wanting to pay and not being given an invoice and IBAN. Boils my pee.

two business im refering to are a local coop and a dealer.in both jobs there is no collecting money prsi holiday s hours all by the book.in the coop its all about getting tests done on lorries and running mainatence checks and the odd break down but in fairness lorries are fresh anyway.tbh 60 euro is taking the piss but 40 is the go now allright.if you knock out 40 hrs a week thats 1200 a week which isnt bad to keep yourself going allowing for van tools tax out of it and any one in the game is knocking out more hours than that

This happened me years ago, lad rang up insisting I went out to sort a problem with a parlour so he could milk, Christmas Eve 9pm, like a fool I went out, sorted the problem by 11pm and then got called all the cnuts under the sun when I produced the invoice.

I heard a story of a farmer who got his own nephew to do work on his tractor. Not only would he not pay him, he wouldn't even pay him for the parts he bought.

I do most of the repair work here myself. Nothing like being able to tear into a job and get it done yourself. When you do it though, you realise how bloody hard it is.

Same as a lot of trades outside of the construction sector, if garages are willing to pay them enough they'll get plenty of good fitters.
