for a 5 year old laptop most likely not.

view it as an "upgrade opportunity"

Just get the other one repaired, you don't need a new one.

    no need to spend 1000

very good laptop for 600 here

    https://www.currys.ie/ieen/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-14-ce0501sa-14-intel-core-i5-laptop-256-gb-ssd-silver-10184651-pdt.html#srcid=11026

you could maybe fix your laptop yes.

but if you want to have a much faster running (4-core cpu and fast ssd hard drive with 8gb ram whereas I'm sure your old one does not have an ssd probably and 4gb ram and an older slower 2-core cpu) . most probably lighter (1.6kg) and one with a much nicer full hd 1080p IPS (clarity and viewing angles) screen this laptop would serve you well for years to come.

to be honest in my own experience of laptops 5 years is usually the point where from a usability point of view it's time to upgrade to realise the benefits of advances in screen quality and speed.

Is it loose screws or broken bits ?

2 part epoxy putty can do wonders.

Im in the same boat for another new laptop.
Is it worth getting a laptop for 300? or should you really spend 600?

I find that laptops only last a few years in my house before they start crashing, powering off etc.
I must have a dusty house or maybe its the kids messing with them.

So id rather get a cheap one every few years but Im not sure how weak these cheap laptops are.

Do you have a desk for a computer? Or is there a need for a moveable laptop? If you do have some part of the house for the computer, then a decent desktop is the way to go. It doesn't move, less likely to break and it should be better spec for the money.

As for how robust a machine is, it really depends on how you take care of them. The more money you spend doesn't necessarily mean they will be more robust, at least for machines in the 400->900 range. Really there is no reason a laptop should be dying in a 'few years' (ie sub 3), unless it lives a very rough life. Maybe when the price dips below 400 you get cheaper plastic which will be less robust in knocks and falls and such.

cheaper laptops usually have cheaper build and not just the material of the case.

e.g. the hinge (what is broken here) in cheaper laptops, particularly ones in years gone by could be of a construction that is not going to last many years unless it never gets stressed.

re buying a laptop in terms of the cheaper end of things with ssd drives becoming the norm the gradual slowing down of the old spinning hard drives will not be a thing like it was in the past. that is the main reason for laptops slowing down. a clean install of windows every 2 years or so is a very good idea also.

ram of 8gb is preferable also. most basic laptops are still only providing 4gb

a good quality screen is a good investment as looking at a sh1t one for 5 to 6 years is painful. for watching youtube or any media this makes a big difference. full hd 1080p ips is what should be looked for.

a crap and cheap keyboard and touchpad will also ruin a laptop. these have improved recently on laptops.

finally it's worth if you can getting a 4-core cpu like in the recent i5's and above.

combine all that together is why generally it's worth spending 600 on something like that hp over something in the 400 range. it's more expensive but you get value for the extra money

I managed to get my laptop back working by blowing into the fans with a straw. It seems to have cleared out dust and its not overheating and crashing anymore.

Im going to hold out and save a bit more for a 500 euro one like this deal:https://www.harveynorman.ie/computing/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-330-15.6-amd-a9-8gb-1tb128gb-midnight-blue.html

You must be right about cheap plastic though. Hinges went on two of my laptops, then they started blue screening due to the bad connections.

A desktop and a vpn client on a cheap laptop could be an idea too.
Is there any reason why that approach isnt done more often?

Thanks. I didn't realise that the cpu was that bad at all. I only saw decent ram and ssd.
So 600 is my target for a good bargain laptop.
