High Gas Bill - what to do

Recently received a gas bill that was nearly double the amount paid for any 2 month period.
It seems excessive compared to other months especially considered we weren't in the house for 3 weeks of that 2 month period (Gas was still on timer for about 3-4 hours per day)

This bill has been paid but how can I challenge the amount billed without getting the common lined - please submit a meter reading or you must have used the gas etc

Is it possible to get my meter checked to make sure it is working correct?

    Hi magic_murph,

Thank you for getting in touch.

If the meter was read by Gas Networks Ireland, we must advise that the bill is correct and the gas units were consumed. The only criteria to process a gas bill are units used as per the meter, standing charges, and carbon tax. We wouldn't have a way of knowing what used the units as that is internal to a property. All we can suggest is having the gas boiler checked by an RGII contractor.

Was the bill prior to this one under-estimated though? If so, the current bill includes a "catch-up" for the units that you were not billed for previously.

Also, on extremely rare occasions, the meter-reading can be noted incorrectly - did you check the meter to compare the reading on the bill with it? If the meter displays a higher reading, then it was taken down correctly, but if it is lower, there was an error.

If none of the above apply, you could request a meter check by Gas Networks Ireland on 1850 200 694, quoting your GPRN. We must advise however that if they do not find a fault, there is a call-out fee. Usually a fault would cause a meter to slow down rather than clock up more units, so we recommend that if you wish to have the gas meter checked, to have the boiler checked by an RGII technician first.

If one of the other scenarios applies, do send us a private message with the relevant Electric Ireland gas account number, stating that you are the account-holder and confirming your name, address and date of birth.

We will reply as soon as possible.

    Thanks,
    Una
