Stupid Question - Thru Axel and QR turbo wheels!

    Hi,

This is probably a stupid question so apologies, but its worth a shot!

Just purchased a new bike, and was really keen for disc brakes ended up buying a road bike that uses thru axels.

I didn't really think through the impact that might have on my turbo setup.

I have a turbo trainer wheel and an Elite Fluid trainer.

Now obviously my new bike is not compatible!

I can see there are ways of converting thru axels to fit to Turbo trainers (although they don't seem to fit on my model) but is there any way of being able to convert my existing turbo wheel (with QR hub) to fit on my thru axel fork?

I am assuming no, and if so I would be looking at getting a new Turbo and a new wheel to replace my current setup....pretty expensive purchase this bike was!!!

Unfortunately can't use my old bike for turbo training as it was stolen (hence the new bike purchase)

    Thanks as always in advance

There is no way of converting a QR wheel to take a thru axle. I have the same problem however I have a QR MTB that I can use on the turbonif I wanted but it’s been so mild this winter that I’ve been able to get out enough to not need the turbo.

In your case rather than buying a new wheel and turbo why not buy a really cheap second hand bike for the turbo. You’ll get one on DD or adverts for €200 and so long as it’s a size up or down from your optimum size you can make it fit you with shorter/longer stem and seatpost/saddle adjustment.

    Thanks lennymc

Unfortunately that won't work for my turbo (Elite Crono Fluid Elastogel). Elite have confirmed this with me.

Either way my turbo wheel won't go on the bike!

Thanks Cee-Jay-Cee yeah I am now torn between forgetting about the turbo altogether (although I have 3 young kids and sometimes my only gap for training is at 6am or 10 pm!)..

    or getting another Bike...

I did see a second hand direct drive trainer for 300 euro which might be an option too.

    Thanks all

If you can leave it set up, there's a lot to be said for having a dedicated turbo bike imo, especially when time limited. I justified direct drive by being able to use my outside bikes, but I ended up putting an old carrera zelos on it, and have it permantly on it. It saves a lot of time, and wear and tear on the better bikes.
