My advice is book a slot a while down the line that suits, then try your luck, I have done it before, just went up and ask if they had any space to test it now. I think it was 50/50, once it was fine they had a cancellation another time the girl said they didn't have capacity as was near closing time.

Log on to website late at night, while cancelled slots are being released - AFAIR approx 23:30 it happens.

I've had my cars tested severalties without an appointment. You drop the car in the morning, pay cash and they'll do it if they have the time. It may take the whole day though until they have a free slot

If possible for you to leave car and get a lift to work - try what Tommyboy40 said above.
Right the local test centre and ask first if they would be ok with this. Don't just show up and expect them to do things your way.

    Otherwise keep checking for cancellations.

Where are you located or how did you manage to get an appointment so fast?

I always use the online system and if you keep checking you can get a test/retest at very short notice - check after 11.30 pm or so and again in the morning and during the day if you can.
I recently got a retest at just after 11.30pm , for example , for 7am the next morning.
