Point a noob in the right direction??

Lads can somebody help me get something straight in my head please?
If a bike is below 395cc (example. BMW g310r) is it still classed as A2 to drive on the LP, but because its below the 395cc its not suitable to do the test on, so a bigger bike would need to be borrowed/rented for the test?

As i have ye, I'm 34 and have up to category A on my LP. I did my IBT recently and my IBT cert is only marked for A1. The instructor kept us on the A1 bikes for the two days. Does this mean that I will have to go back and do it again if I want to drive bigger bikes because if so, that will be a major dose? I've loved bikes all my life and am finally in a position where I can try and get started (jesus, it's expensive business!) so all this red tape is a wee bit confusing! Thanks for any help offered lads

Hey there,

Yup you are correct about the A2 bike but also keep an eye on power output. Some bikes are in the right CC range but outside the KW range

If you did the A1 IBT you are only covered for an A1 bike up to 125cc. Perhaps there was some confusion with the instructor. Your LP will have all the categories but the IBT you hold restricts what you can legally use on the road and what test you can do.

You'll need to do module 5 in the IBT to ride an A2 or A bike now.

Hey, thanks for replying bud. I'm sickened by this. Its my own fault for not speaking up though. The other lad was struggling so the instructor kept us on the 125's on the second day. I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and do it again. Talk about flushing money down the drain!

If I do module 5 now though and go to A2 will I not have to do the full IBT again if I want to progress to Cat A?

I'd have a chat with your instructor and explain, see if you can get a deal on doing the extra bits you need for the A IBT
