Have an 08 1.9tdi golf.engine went bang this morning oil everywhere.
Money is fairly tight, have about 2k to spend,is it worth fixing and putting a 2nd hand engine in?
Need something reliable as I have a long commute.

depends what sort of car it is, if its low mile low owner, never been in accident all original paint, gt body kit, good option, then yes, its worth it. If its another irish 10owner, 3times repainted, blank inside and out, then dont bother, go get yourself petrol civic for 1500 and you wont have headache again

    It's high mileage,have it myself about 6 year,standard spec.
Just did clutch and flywheel before Xmas.
Doing about 200km round trip a day so would need to be a diesel if I was changing.

I’d nearly be inclined to fix it once you knew the new engine was good and the price includes stuff like timing belt.

There is the whole BXE thing too.

Cheers, any idea roughly what it would cost for an engine.

What exactly happens by current engine? The oil everywhere does not mean automatically the engine are done.

1500eur for swapping the engine are too much to ask. Put another 1k and you get the entire car by 130 000km

08 1.9 tdi golf will most likely be a bxe (put the rod out through the block engine) you can get them replaced with an older style 1.9pd tdi. But finding a mechanic willing to do such work at a reasonable price could be tricky. Depending on what part of the country you're in.

Having a mechanic look at it later, was just a big bang from engine and loss of power like it was down a cylinder ,so pulled it over ,oil at bottom of engine, it started again to pull it in further off the road as I was in a dangerous spot .

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Dump it, you'll easily get a grand for it. Add your two grand budget and you have the money for a very decent car.

I'd disagree a bit, no way you'll get a grand for an 08 high miler Golf with no engine and if you're aren't too sure what you are looking at, €2k will only buy you another liability, particularly with diesel cars.

You'd probably get a used engine fitted for €1k ish. I'd do that in the mindset that you can get another 2-3 years from the car.

    Trade it

Trade a car with a bust engine? Good luck with that.

My sister had a 08 golf that went bang, iirc the engine sump casing was made out of recycled chinese crap steel and is a common fault.
Some crowd in kilkenny on done deal left it right for e1000.
She got rid of it soon after. If yours is the same I'd be wary about a second hand engine.

If you have a free space, then sell it piece by piece on ebay
