Whats my name?

If my birth cert says my name is Michael Danny Higgins, then my passport, driving licence, licence, bank account etc will have Michael Higgins as my name.

But, if my parents decided in their wisdom to call me Danny since childhood, then i am also known as Danny by my family and school friends. The name Danny sticks into adulthood but it raises questions later in life particularly at work, where people say why are you calling yourself Danny and your wages are going to Michael?

Something similar happened to me. When I started applying for official documents I just used both names to avoid any confusion.

My grandmother was always known by a name that wasn't on her birth cert at all. Almost nobody knew her real name.

Names are terrible format of identification, we should all really have our own unique identifier, and be addressed in that format, a number - hexadecimal maybe
