new broadband

    Hi geting new broadband into the house.
    Existing broadband in office and have cat5 wired back into house. Have wifi router pluged into the cat5 point.
    The wifi is shocking bad and at this stage going to get broadband directly into house.
    Siro will be comming to town at the end of the year so idea is going to go with a company that supports fiber to the home- sky /vodafone.

    Any idea of which companies router is better for wifi.
    and what are they like ( assume their customer service has to be better than EIR)

    Is it Cat5 or Cat5e and what is the distance of the run from the office to the house?

    Cat5e on a reasonable length run should be as good as having the broadband in the house even with FTTH as it would support 1Gb. Can you test with a laptop/desktop directly cabled to the cat5 point in the house to see if you get full speeds as in the office?

    It could be that the WiFi router isnt very good (what model is it) or poorly placed (at one end of the house where the Cat5 enters, central is often better).

    As to ISPs equipment the Fritzbox's from Digiweb and Airwire get good feedback on here but many of us would use our own router as an access point or bridged to the ISPs equipment running in modem only mode.
