Plaster over chipboard

I understand this is not advisable and yet I have to repair a section of ceiling that has been in place for a good 30 years and is apparently made of such a construction.

Would this chipboard perhaps have been bought ready coated?

Or might the chipboard have been somehow primed to take the plaster ?

The section I need to replace would be about 6 by 0.5 metres -so not such a tall order (there are wooden joists running the length)

Not really clear what you want to do. Yes someone could of put up chip board instead of plaster board, which wouldn't be great from a fire point of view. Best option would be to take it down, insulate (if above is exterior) then re-board. The other option would be to just over-board with plaster board, 6 x 0.5m would be slightly over one board, which is about €10.

If the finish isn't critical you could probably just tape and join the seams in the board, depending on how you align them.
