It actually refers to the 'national speed limit'. So back in the day, that was 60mph here and then changed to 100kph. Other countries have their own, the UK's is 60mph iirc. It saved having to change signs if the national speed limit was changed.

That 5 stripe sign won't help travel assist in my car to adjust speed. Might as well be hieroglyphics.

Is that sign used anywhere else in Europe? I would have thought that these things were homogenised across the EU to avoid confusion for tourists and long distance lorry drivers.

So if you get caught speeding in a modified speed zone, its your cars fault right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭quantum_technician

It will always be the driver's fault until FSD but this government are not future proofing the road network.

Read the wiki article on the sign and see the big issue with that 5 bar sign.

    https://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/2014/si/488/made/en/print

    That says 80kmh

I presume the updated act says 60kmh

I think that legislation supercedes any wiki page.

In the UK it means 70mph on a dual carriageway.

Back in the days before the fun police, you could do 150MPH up the M1 in your E-type (or on your slightly tuned Vincent Black Shadow) quite legally.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

In the UK, it's single solid black line, here is 5 thin stripes, Different sign.

And it has no black border.

    UK

    ROI

The only thing I have against the Irish sign, is that generally a speed limit with a black circle is advisory, where as a red circle, is compulsory.

Your pic is a good example also to show that in Ireland the Rural speed limit sign must be displayed in combination with the supplementary Plate "Go Mall SLOW".

    Fairly self explanatory.

What's the range of the new average speed cameras?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,089 ✭✭✭wassie

Range isn't really an issue as speed is not recorded by the cameras. Instead they use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to record the time, date, and location of each vehicle that passes through.

Its all about the time taken to travel from the first camera image to the second, which is a fixed distance.

It's the same unit that's in the gosafe vans, but because it's mounted higher, and further in from the road edge, it will have longer range than the vans.

I've posted previous the diagram showing the range over a number of lanes.

    OOPS

I read that wrong, i thought you were asking about the range of teh new fixed speed cameras

Can Garda car parked on the side of the road be used for catching speeding cars? Do they have tools to automatically issue speeding tickets like the speed vans or do they have to stop the car and issue on the spot fine?

is there some sort of automatic speed camera on the N24 near Limerick after the tunnel heading south?

Got flashed by something yesterday evening, was doing 100 and sat nav on the car said speed limit was 100, I know that’s not always accurate.

    Anyone know?

A car on the side of the road can be used for catching speeding cars if the Gardaí inside it have a speed gun.

No, they do not HAVE to stop the car but it is best practice to do so and it's very rarely that a speed gun intercept would not involve stopping the speeding vehicle. Stopping a vehicle allows the Garda to obtain the actual drivers details as opposed to issuing an FCN to the registered owner assuming they were driving. It also allows the Garda to show the driver the speed they were doing and also canvas for excuses/reasons for speeding to avoid some of the points of contention in court should the FCN be challenged.

FCNs can be issued immediately via the issued mobility devices (phones)

So what's the best answer to the, "Do you know what speed you were doing?" question?

    Asking for a friend :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,522 ✭✭✭Killinator

That depends on wether or not you want to pass the 'atitude test' 😜

Hi, got pulled over by a guard in Rathcoffey this morning, he was hidden and he said I was doing 76 in a new 60 rural zone, I genuinely thought the road was 80, I have been off the road since the new speed zones came into place with severe hyperemesis (I am pregnant). Guard took my license, checked my new address, didn't show me the speed on the gun and said "you need to slow down, that is it for now".

Is there any chance he won't send a Fixed Penalty Notice to me? I am in an awful state, spent the day crying and my blood pressure won't come down after the incident. I have never been stopped and it has had an awful affect on me.

    Thanks.

No one will be able to say for certain. He may, then again, he may not.

It's not worth getting yourself worked up though, it's a really minor thing all things considered. Just try to forget about it.

On a side note, I hate the ambiguous way some Gardai leave these interactions. Almost like they do it on purpose to keep people guessing.

Thanks a million, he wasn't very nice so I should expect the worse, he didn't seem to mind the smell of sick from my sick bag on my lap. Ah I should have stayed at home today, I was about 5 mins from work and all I could think of was getting to the toilet. Lesson learned. Thanks again.
