I'm looking at the Dell XPS 15" 9570 at the minute as my portable editing machine. Seems to be the most highly rated amongst editors I know, but before I grab one is there an alternative machine in the same bracket of power and price?

there are not a lot of competitors to the dell xps 15 really.

there were some problems re throttling of the video card due to bad thermals - not sure what the current status of that is.

    some alternatives listed here

if you don't need the 15 inch this could be a less expensive alternative - has discrete graphics in the form of a less powerful mx150 although the screen is not as good as the xps 15

The screen isn't a huge deal, but would be great for colour grading I have to admit, but the power of the GPU, Processor and RAM are a big seller for me. The XPS looks like an animal for Premiere, so might have to bite the bullet and grab one

only thing is that the xps 15 is rather heavy for carrying around in a bag.

that envy is a lot lighter at 1.3kg

the envy has a 4-core i5 (won't be much difference to the dell xps as even i7 mobile u chips are less than 10% more powerful in use than the i5's) and an nvidia mx150 which will provide some useful horsepower for editing

1080p editing would be fine on either

the xps would still struggle on 4k editing

you could add in more ram to the envy

I've the previous XPS 15 (9560) and while it's good on paper it's a dog in reality.

The weight isn't really an issue for me, and I only really edit 4k footage from Drones, I shoot everything else 1080.

The smaller SSD and only 4 cores are an issue. (And the lower RAM) I know the SSD and RAM are upgradeable but doing that puts it in the bracket of pricing of the XPS without the processor bump
