Can't decide between two jobs

    Hi All,

I have two job offers on the table and I need to decide between the two. I am very fortunate to be in this position. It is an incredibly difficult decision and it's causing me enormous stress as I am completely torn and would appreciate the advice.

    Job #1
    Well renowned, global company.
    36k with 5% bonus.
    25 annual leave days.

    Job #2
    Well renowned, global company.
    46k with 10% bonus.
    25 annual leave days.

    Job #1
Is my preference in terms of product, as I use their product every day. However, the recruitment process was not good. I was in it for 3 whole months, and when it came to offer stage, there was zero negotiation in terms of salary. This company is double the size of company #2.

    Job #2
I rarely use this company's product. The recruitment process was excellent. When I told them I had an offer with job #1, they had me screened and onsite within the week, and offered me the position the following Monday. There would be slightly greater opportunity for career progression as they're smaller than company #1 and they're experiencing a growth phase.

If I was to go with company #1, I'd be taking a 4K hit on salary, whereas if I go with company #2, my salary would be increasing by 6k. However, I prefer company #1 purely because they have an onsite gym and I use their product daily.

It really is an incredibly difficult decision.

All opinions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Company 2 for me

Company 2 every day of the week.

    More money
    More challenging
Not a step back in terms of pay
The quick turnaround indicates how keen they are for you to join - night even get another bump in salary if you ask.

And the poor and slow recruitment process in company 1, If that’s indicative of how that company works imagine trying to get decisions made and implemented.

And if you went with company 1 you would be “paying” or sacrificing €400 cash a month to use their gym and market their product.

Not sure that’s a great deal tbh

Gym membership won’t cost you 10k a year

Do you get free product with company one?

Option two, and pay for gym membership out of your extra 13k per annum. Definition of no brainer.

So you are willing to take a 4k hit on your salary because they have an onsite gym?, madness, company 2 sounds like a way better option. More money, better career prospects.

    Free product in both.

What about brand? Company #1 is by far the bigger brand. When I told my friends I had been offered a job here they were all like "wow!", whereas company #2 is not as big of a brand and their reaction was "oh cool". Does brand matter?

I am conscious of my next move after this one. Will I get into another company easier because I have company #1 on my CV, rather than company #2?

Also it is not important to be passionate about the product?

Always look to your next role. That makes sense.

But you're likely to progress further in the smaller company so better able to transfer to a better job in another company.

Company brand is nice, but not huge when looking for new roles.

Early in my career I worked in the world leading company for its industry, and I felt pigeon holed and left for career diversity.

Again, what your friends think is nice, but rather superficial in my view.

Either way, looks like two good roles. Good luck.

      Are you in sales?

      Company #2

Passionate about the product? Are you selling it? If you're working outside of 'marketing', no you don't need to be passionate about the product, you need to be passionate about the company and it appears you are not passionate about Company #1.

Id be more passionate about my career tbh. Nothing about company 1 beats company 2 bar brand and the wow factor from your friends. It's your call but inflexibility on salary would make me think how much do they value me!

        Recruitment.

Unless you're working for Doctors without borders or the like and you're very passionate about that. But, a product? Less likely to be relevant.

Big companies that have lots of users can afford to not negotiate on salary because they know they have people lining up to work for them based on name recognition alone.

Just because you are familiar with a product does not mean the job is better. 10k difference in salary. And it sounds like you'd be taking a pay cut to work for company 1?

I'd also pay attention to the interview process. If it wasn't pleasant, dragged on and they wouldn't budge then this might be a good indicator of how they behave to their existing employees.

Company 2 every day for me.

Never heard such a crock of sh1te...Go way and enjoy your weekend and don't be asking no brainer questions.

I'd get off at the same train station for both, so wouldn't make a difference.

I think you've all helped me to make my decision as not one person has said company #1.

If you have any ambition in your career then #2 sounds like the only option.

        Seriously Jane.
How can you work in recruitment and think that this is a question you need outside opinions on?
What skills do you bring to the role of considering peoples employment needs and behaviours that wouldn't have answered this for you.

I would expect that in recruitment you will have applicants asking you what do you think about an offer and companies asking you to gauge an applicants likelihood to accept a role.

Job 2 (in case the x number of answers above aren't enough to convince you)

Company 2. The first one isn't even worth considering in comparison.

I’m going to play devils advocate and say company one.

Although it depends on your individual circumastances. If you are young and really only using either company 1 or 2 as a stepping stone for your next job I would personally want to work for the most well known and respected company.

Top companies place a huge emphasis on their people and attracting the best candidates. Likewise top companies only want the best recruiters. I personally think that working in company one will add value to your future career and make you more desirable as a future top class recruiter.

Obviously, company one sound better financially speaking but it depends on what you value and your gut feeling.

        Congrats on the job offers!

        Congratulations.
From reading your initial post I would have gone with company 2. Company culture is key for me. Sounds like company 2 have their wits about them.

        Best of luck.

Company no 2 for me is an absolute no brainer, I wouldn't even consider a job that was 10 k below what I was being offered. How do both companies compare on Glassdoor? Don't worry about the onsite gym, plenty of other gyms around.

This is an absolute no brainier for me - option 2.

Forget about the better money, etc.

The fact that option 1 has such screwed up HR is a huge red flag for me.

The place is either a mess or they're process nazis. Both are bad.

EDIT: Just noticed you accepted option 2. Well done & good luck!
