    Hey All,

So just wondering what BER rating people got with their new builds when they used the standard wall vents instead of going with DCV or heat recovery.

    the rating doesnt change..

the specification will have to change depending on the choice of ventilation, heating system, construction etc.

so basically..... the outcome goals dont change... what you do to meet them changes.....

    A

Doesn’t matter what you use, you’ll still need to meet an A rating. A3 or A2
As the jump to A1, most home owners won’t pay the money involved.

It’s worth mentioning that it’s madness not installing hrv in a new build. You might get the house to achieve compliance with regulations but you will have to compensate elsewhere by improving specification. A large proportion of the cost of a new house is in insulation and air tightness. It’s nonsensical to be coring holes in walls after spending all that money on keeping the house insulated and airtight.

    Fully agree.

To back up this point only 47.3% of new builds now use natural ventilation and standard wall vents. Most new houses now use mechanical ventilation. Either Mechanical Ventilation with heat recovery or Demand Control Ventilation.

Source of that figure and an interesting article on what people are using in their new homes:

That website in general is good for anyone building. I've no relationship with the website besides liking it.

    Thanks all

Just getting a bit bogged down with the ratings and figures, rather than the fact that I want to be comfortable living in the house for the next 50 years.

Sorry to sidetrack -- but that link indicates also that 3000+ one offs failed to comply with requirement to obtain a BER ....
