iPhone to android data transfer (huawei P20 Pro)

    Hi everyone!

Hoping someone can help me out pretty please? :) I’m an iPhone user and have been since I first started using smartphones! Today I made the switch and bought a Huawei P20 Pro. Main reason is I have a new baby and not enough storage on iPhone I have so decided to go for the best camera (according to the internet) to take all the photos of baba :) battery life also a big bonus plus I’m looking forward to a change.

So... because I’ve had iPhones forever, everything is saved on the phone, I’m wondering how I can transfer all my data to my new android? The guys in the shop said there’s an app? I don’t know what to trust online so am asking the experts here! I mainly want all my photos, whatsapp messages and other messages if possible, my contacts and calendar entries and I’d be happy with that!

Would be very grateful for any advice ye can offer!

    Thanks a mill :)

Ok feeling a bit silly that this seems so easy?! I had google photos on my phone and all my photos are already backed up to that. It took a long time! Will that effect the back up to google drive? I should add that I’ve deleted almost every app from phone (including google photos) so that I could back up my whatsapp to iCloud which I did yesterday. 13gb of my phone is taken up with the system. Then whatsapp, photos and safari are the next 3 big things (my phone is 16gb).

I moved from iPhone to P20 Pro recently. A few points:
You will lose your whatsapp messages. There is no way to transfer these when moving between iphone to android and visa versa. Just backup your photos to google photos.
You can send your whatsapp chat history to email I think if you want to back them up, but they wont be there when you use whatsapp on the P20.
Once you have all your photos backed up to Google Photos, they will automatically be there once you install google photos on the P20 and login
For contacts the Android switch app will probably transfer those, another option is to just back them up to your google account whilst in your iPhone and then they'll be available in the P20 also once you log into google account

What other data do you need to transfer. In general it's easy to store everything in the cloud, it makes switching phones far less painful

Thank you very much! To be honest the main thing I want is my whatsapp messages :( I’m in a lot of baby related groups etc and go back to my whatsapp messages for a lot of things. I have it backed up to iCloud...
Will I be deleted from my whatsapp groups?
I have my photos backed up to google photos and on my laptop. Would like to have them on the phone but again not necessary and whatsapp is my main concern!

Your groups will still be there, just the message history will be empty. If you check in the iphone whatsapp settings, I think there is an option to email chat history. If you email it to yourself it might be the best option, at least you can go back and search when you need.
There are some online services say that say they will transfer whatsapp history between iphone <--> Android but I've never seen any that work. It's a pain alright.

For photos, just install google photos on the P20 and use it as your main photo app and you'll automatically always have all your photo's once you've them back up from iPhone. It's a fantastic app/service. You can even go as far as automatically sending photos between partners e.g. every photo I take of my son is automatically synced to my wifes google photos account so they appear on her phone within a few minutes. Shared albums on google photos are also brilliant for sharing baby photos with grand parents

Thanks a mill, I’m not too hopefully so! Tried mailing all the chats but not working for me due to lack of storage on iPhone! I might turn on the P20 Pro and download whatsapp and see what happens. Try a few things from the internet and see do any of them work while I’m still using the iPhone. Not too optimistic though!!

That’s great, didn’t realised google photos did all that, will defo set up sharing with grandparents. They’ll be delighted!

Don't setup whatsapp on P20 until you've backed up your iPhone whatsapp chats. Once you do that whatsapp won't work on iPhone and you'll definitely lose the chat history

I’ve backed it up to the iCloud about 2 days ago... that’s ok right?

Not correct, I switch between iOS and Android most often and transfer WhatsApp and iMessage all the time. If you are little tech savvy you can do it.

WhatsApp- search WhatsApp migrator for instruction.
iMessage : isms2droid search for all instruction.

I posted instruction few weeks ago, will try to find and post here.

    This is instruction with link.

You need to extract chatstorage.sqlite file from iPhone backup and then transfer to android phone. Then download wazzup migrator app to transfer whatsapp data. Don't download whatsapp before as need to be specific version of WhatsApp and after you can update. If you Google wazzup migrator, you will find instructions.

For messages it's same process ie copying the sms db from backup then using isms2droid app.

    All the best!

I think the only way you can actually access it from iCloud is using an iPhone. So because you are moving to android I don't know if that iCloud backup is any use to you.

It is not that hard to be honest, instructions are pretty clear, very quick process too.

Thanks so much, this is great! Will look at instructions tomorrow. Will this work from my iCloud or does it need to be a back up on the computer as I don’t have one?

What do you recommend I do? Should I put my sim into new phone and do everything then or set up new phone and then put sim in last? Only reason I ask is that the guy in shop said to set up phone first. Not sure what his reasons were.

    Thanks again, much appreciated!

Need to be local unencrypted backup on your laptop, doesn’t work from iCloud. Need to put sim in new phone for verification of sms etc.
