Buying a 3 year old A5/A6, should I go with petrol over diesel?

Currently trying to sell my '09 A5 and when/if I do I plan on going to the UK for a 16 A5/A6. From the research I've done I'll get one under 50,000km, highly specced for about 29k. Can't post a link as I'm a new user.

My current car is a diesel and had issues with the dpf about a year ago so I'm wondering would I be better off going with a petrol model. My main driving is 25km each way to/from work five days a week with longer drives about once a month. Averaging about 23,000 km a year over the last four years. Have always had a diesel car, would have no problem changing but not sure if it would be practical for my driving. Thanks for any replies!

What type of driving is that annual mileage, is it mostly stop/start driving or long motorway type runs? If it's the former then a petrol would be more suitable than a diesel so it's not really how far you drive but rather the type of driving you do.

It's mostly motorway driving but long trips only about once a month. My 25km to work each day is mostly motorway but with the dpf issues I had I'm wondering is this too short a trip to keep everything running smoothly?

I think you'd be fine with diesel and in my own personal opinion, based on my own experience and that of friends/family, poor reliability of diesels with small to average miles is very overstated.

At 25k kms, there's a significant enough cost saving on running a diesel over petrol.

If you want petrol though, you might find it hard enough to actually find a petrol Audi. I can't remember the last time I ever saw a petrol A5/6 that wasn't an "S" model.

Thanks for that Joe, only starting to look at my options in the last few days really so all ideas are welcome. Seems like diesel is the right choice, I've had my previous car for 6 1/2 years now and pretty happy with Audi but any suggestions on alternatives in the same price bracket? Needs to be 4 door with a new arrival due in June but bar that I'd be open to any ideas?

Would love that but need four doors from now on, last car was a 2 door and loved it but have to start being sensible now

Leaning towards something like the first two but tempted by the 420, been (happily) driving an Audi for almost 7 years so might need a change!

I have a 420d GC myself about a year. Very nice car and yes it’s a little different from the sea of Audi’s that’s out there. However the A6 would be noticeably roomier in the cabin I’d say, and arguably the Audi has the nicer looking interior, as Audi interiors tend to be. The A6 would be more of a 5 series rival whereas the 4 would be more of a rival to the A4 or A5.

The coupe styling of the 4 series makes the interior feel that bit more claustrophobic. But it’s fine really. And the boot is massive and very practical - it opens up like a hatchback.

Yeah, as you say there are lots of Audis out there, I'm coming from an A5 coupe so I'd imagine the interior size is pretty similar? Haven't found it a problem personally as I'd be on the short side! How do you find the interior styling of the 420d, one of the things I loved about the A5 was the interior, not sure I'd like the 420 as much.

I like it. The plastics and instruments aren’t up to latest Audi standards but it’s still a very nice place to be. The seating position (low slung) and ergonomics are excellent. Definitely much better than Audi in that regard. My wife has an A4 and I find the pedals layout laughably bad!

The pro navigation and Harmon Kardon audio is super too.

I’m also a bit on the short side, so the coupe snug interior is no problem for me either!

With the cream leather like in mine, it looks pretty good I think.
