Rolex Submariner mini rant

I know a watch is a personal subjective thing down to the individual, but I can't believe the amount of people who want submariners. Not just boards, but across all watch messageboards, reddit, instagram and even replica boards it's submariners. Half of replica boards are subs. I mean, it's a nice watch, but you could get something like this for the same price:
    https://www.chrono24.com/vacheronconstantin/watch-overseas-49140423a-8886--id9832204.htm

I dunno, I suppose I like a steel royal oak and nautilus and lots of people hate them. The amount of people who are mad for subs is crazy, I can't understand it and when a watch is as popular as that it loses a bit of appeal for me.

    Rant over, bring it on!

i suppose its the iconic status and history of it,
and the status symbol element too, make no mistake!....

"Hey mate Like my new Rolex?...Woah that's amazing......"
"Hey Mate, like my new Vacheron?....your what?

people want to impress others at the end of the day...
    its a pretty human emotion

    cheers

Hate to bring it back to cars again, but it's the same with them. You can get twice the car for half the price of one of the "top" German brands, but it doesn't have that all important badge.

A lot of people aspire to own a Rolex, same as some would aspire the own a BMW. It's a status symbol as much as a watch, and there's nothing necessarily wrong with that.

They're undeniably aspirational pieces alright plus the design of the Sub is pretty much timeless (excuse the pun).

It’s marketing done really well, along with the likes of Mc Donalds or Bose.. they most definitely aren’t the best burgers/speakers/watches etc but they know how to market the sh1t out of their products!

Not gonna lie, I did aspire to own a sub and bought a 14060 no date and barely wore it as I felt that every second person I saw was wearing one and most were fake!

Much happier with the other watches I own that are similarly priced so it’s not down to the price for me.

I will probably own another Rolex in the coming years but not a bog standard sub.

Where are you living that every second person is wearing a Sub? Don't think I've ever noticed anybody wearing one.

Exactly - to each their own. The watch you linked to above does absolutely nothing for me, I think it's a weird mishmash of styles. But that's why thankfully there's lots of variety available.

I'd reckon Porsche are a better fit A. Both extremely well known brands for "upper middle class, I've arrived money and prestige". And easy choice. Both continue to produce small increments in styling and are quite conservative. Both have been brilliant at marketing. The Sub is the equivalent of an air cooled Porsche. The one to have. The James Bond stuff helped. Though personally I'm not keen on them and it comes down to the Mercedes hands. Can't abide them for some reason. For me the only one I'd want is the UK military issued MilSub, that was fitted with the hands from an Omega at the time. That was also issued. The special forces guys and divers reported back and said the Rolex was much more waterproof and the Omega was likely to come back from a dive flooded and looking like a spirit level. But they preferred the Omega hands and the bezel as they were more legible and useful. Omega increased their water resistance and Rolex changed the hands and bezel. Only for this model.

    MILSUB-GEAR-PATROL-AMBIANCE-11.jpg

And consider this: when the UK military were procuring them they were cheap enough to consider. The same price as the Omega at the time. And other marques. Price catalogues of the time show this. Quality steel cased divers from all the usual Swiss brands were around 200-300 quid/bucks. They were all competing in the jeweller's shop window for the same buyers. No monopoly type Swatch/LMVH groups and others staggering brands in different price ranges.

Of mad money divers I'd much prefer the first series vintage Longines Skindiver or Blancpain 50 fathoms. A slightly later twin crown compressor cased vintage Longines diver would be about the same outlay as a new Rolex Sub.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I think my main problem is just buying such a popular watch. I'd rather have something a bit different, maybe it's easy for me to say cos I'm not the one with €10k in my pocket shopping for watches.

A huge factor is value retention at the moment.

By the sub for 8k. Sell it for 7k no probs.

Buy most other brands for 8 k. Second hand value is suddenly 4-5k.

Buying most brands new is frightening unless there is a 20-30% discount from RRP.

Buy an Explorer, no one what they are which I like also they will hopefully have the value retention of the Rolex brand.

I was going to spend 2k on a Tudor but thought to hell with it I'll save a bit more and get the Explorer.

The Explorer should for a long time be worth in or around €4k which is 2k less then the price of one new.

So I see the explorer as a 2k watch

I don't think it's quite as simple as just the badge/brand, otherwise I'd expect that the highest demand would be for the most affordable model, which I think is an oyster date.

Wibbs - totally agreed on the hands; the swords look way better. It just wasn't a deal breaker for me, and I'm just glad they're not the SMP skeletal hands.

That's totally understandable. As I said, to each their own.

I think Rolex is just the most well known expensive watch brand. If you asked someone who isn't into watches much what would you buy if you won the lottery they'd say Rolex 'cos thats all they'd know. And therefore it is the most recognisable expensive watch brand and lets be honest most people will buy them to impress.

Ocean one vintage military is in stock on the website - https://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/diver-watch/ocean-vintage-military-new.html - admittedly, there are a couple of small changes from the one pictured.

The MK1 commands a significant premium.

    Why?

    Not fully sure.

Small number run I guess so a little bit more rare.

Same reason some rolex buyers go crazy about “flat 4” bezels and other micro differences within a model.

    Why?
V2 changed the dial colour to grey (instead of black) and made some minor changes to the writing on the dial.

The changes meant that V1 was closer in overall look to the Rolex that Steinhart were copying. So for a time some were willing to pay slightly more for a V1.

V3 reverted to the black dial. Since then, as far as i'm aware nobody is willing to pay more for a V1 any more. Of course you'll get some optimistic sellers but something is worth what people will pay, not what the seller wants. You'd be mad to buy a used V1 for more than a brand new V3 with warranty.

    kind of on topic....

I watch that guy Jody (Just one more watch) on YT
and he has a vid that he will never buy a Sub
Basically because he has issues with the wider lug setup on the new ones now
Does this bother anyone else? i can actually see his point

    rgds

I totally understand that - I think the older ones look more balanced and better proportioned.

But I'd only buy the wider shouldered version because the old ones wear smaller, even if they're both 40mm. And I think the bracelet was updated too on the SubC.

hands down the 16610 is nicer.

If were plugging sales, I have a similar V1 for sale for here too!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 562 ✭✭✭Etc

I've a 116610 and love it. It can be worn formal or casual, looks great on different straps and doesn't wear big on the wrist so it's not in your face. For me it's a classic design, I have a speedmaster too and like that for the same reason.

None of my colleagues or friends are into watches so for all they know I could be wearing a casio (which I own too).

I got mine for a great price, if I ever decide to sell it I'll get my money back, so no dowsides to owning a Sub for me !
