Don’t know if this has been done before on AH (I suspect it hasn’t), but post up your funny/humorous maps here.

    Here goes...

I love those maps that don't have New Zealand in them. Poor guys are too far away.

    Here's a prime example:

The Peters Projection map, which is designed to show relative areas to be compared more accurately:

    0117492_CoverImage_28229_PetersWorldPol_jkt.jpeg

The standard Mercator Projection map makes North America look much bigger than Africa, but is it? No:
    • Africa: 30.3 million km²
    • North America: 24.7 million km²
    • USA: 9.8 million km²
So North America is smaller, and the USA - including Alaska (1.7 million km²) - is less than a third the size of Africa. Europe really is that small.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

―Oscar Wilde predicting Social Media, in The Picture of Dorian Gray

What's that? You think I don't like the Peters map because I'm uncomfortable with having my cultural assumptions challenged? Are you sure you're not... ::puts on sunglasses:: ...projecting?

The Mercator projection shows Greenland and Africa to be approximately the same size. In reality, Africa is roughly 14 times bigger!

Back in the days when Nation States weren't a thing in most of the world, the huge advantage of Mercator to navigators on ships was that a straight line on such a map was a straight line in the real world too.

Here's a map of the highest group of non-locals in each country in Europe. (The UK contingent are hanging on in as the biggest group in Ireland, against a very strong effort by the Polish. ;) )
