Watching a bit. Have always liked him. Did nt know he had drink 'problem'. Think he said he drinks six days a week. A big fan of the Guinness. Clear from watching it that he over reliant on alcohol, but not an out an out alcoholic

    He was a heavy drinker.

He put away 34 units in one day but never bothered anyone.

By the end he was down to 25 units a week.

    Interesting programme well worth watching.

People don't like being made to feel like they might have a problem and don't like nuance. :pac:

No-one could drink like I did and say they didn't have an issue with alcohol. I wasn't an "alcoholic". I could get 24 cans on the way home from work, drink most of them and feel fine the next day. Not good. :P So I stopped. I wasn't one for heading out, I just absolutely loved drinking.
But it affects everyone differently. It completely stunted me in ways I still can't fully describe or understand. It wasn't the simple and trite "alcohol is a depressant, therefore..." thing. It meant I didn't deal with things. I could put it to the back of my head til I got drunk. I would sometimes sub drugs in but drinking was always my favorite.
I still see it with friends. One had a big wake-up call recently and he would never drink during the week. But every Friday and Saturday he had to drink. It was a similar thing, push everything back, get to Friday, get ****ed up and repeat. It gives a re-assuring structure as well. Get through the week, get ****ed on Friday, hang a bit on Satuday, head out Saturday, hang on Sunday wrecked and get an early night.

No-one wants to think they have a problem. A lot of people don't. Pathologising everything isn't a road we should go down. But two people drinking similar amounts can have 2 very different reasons for drinking and very different ways of handling it.

When he said he put away 34 units he meant because he works in a warehouse these days.

Drinks 6 days a week but 5 if those days are three pints max... why is there a difference between that and 2 glasses of wine in France/Italy/Spain

Ive seen it already. Quite an insightful documentary. He comes across as a fairly nice bloke which is contrary to his somewhat abrupt presenting style.

In France people have a glass of wine at lunch and return to work, do that here in Ireland you'd probably get sacked. Have a bottle of beer and your definitely getting the sack.

Typical glass of wine 1.9 units
    Pint of Larger 2.3 units
    Bottle of Larger 1.4 units

You have a bottle of beer with dinner and you might have a problem, but have wine its grand.

Had this happen to me once or twice, I don't drink much but the look i got from a family member when i was having a beer with my dinner on a Tuesday at 6:30 after work a few months back was as if i'd just starting necking a bottle of vodka, same one seems no problem having a half bottle of wine every evening

I could identify alot with his situation, putting away quite abit but not enough that I need to stop outright, though i have cut back in the last while.Lot of people in the same boat I presume. Still you know deep down its doing you damage over time

That's a thing in Ireland that annoys me and it really doesn't lead to a healthy culture; you're either drinking or not drinking.

I’ve always really liked Adrian Chiles. Just really like him as a presenter and he comes across as an intelligent guy unlike so many TV presenters. Gonna try and watch this documentary if I can. I never knew he had alcohol issues.

Tell me about it. I'd have often grab a few alcohol-free wheat beers and have them of an evening if i'm training the next day. The looks i get, i like the taste and there is a little bit of alcohol, but nothing that gives me a hangover, and doesn't affect my training the next day. Its a treat and better that coke i'd imagine

My New Years resolution, as for a lot of people, was to cut back on drinking.

Automatically feel better and exercising more. All too easy to bury yourself in alcohol and was getting to be too much.

Personally for me it was a temporary substitute, I think the trick is to find a substitute that is better for you all round.

Thought it was great but he missed one bit advice given by the Dr, have 3 to 4 drink free days, he wasn't been told to stick to 25 or 14 units just to give more drink free days which would effetely be reduction of 15 to 20 pints or 35 to 50 units.

Every employer is different and it depends on what you do for a living.
If there is nothing in your contract against having a drink at lunch and you are not breaking the law and they would be hard pressed to fire you legally. Commercial drivers have different laws for alcohol levels than regular drivers so even half a pint would put a commercial driver over the limit.

Also there is a difference between having a drink and being drunk. If you come back to work after lunch noticeably sloppy or unable to work correctly then they can discipline you. However the majority can safely have one drink with the lunch without issues. If you cant handle one drink then you shouldnt have that one drink at lunch.

I have a beer with a burger at lunch about once a week and nobody cares.

Also you family member who thought it was weird to have a beer with dinner is very strange.
