I have lost my car keys on a recent flight to Turkey. Although they have found it but want me to collect it from there. I am working on it.

But till the time they arrive im without car. I have two questions

If i ask my insurance company for replacement of keys will it hit my NCB

If i want to get them made from outside, who to contact? Any recommendations. Im based in Tallaght

    Regards

    Sunny

It will probably affect your NCD, and you’ll probably have to pay an excess.

Best to contact your insurance company and ask. I’d be inclined to sit tight till the keys arrive.

    Would travel insurance cover this?

    Depends on the insurance company.
From experience most of them don't affect your no claims discount. However you will have to pay the excess which is actually usually more expensive than getting someone to make new keys for you.

Depends on the car what the options are, on most modern cars a key from a main dealer can be anything from €150 to €500, they may be able to make one up easy enough based on you providing the vehicle licencing certificate or if may be more complex where they have to order it in.

Might be cheaper to just hire a car for a couple of days, vs getting new key cut - depending on how long it might be before you can pick up your own keys.

If it's at the lower end of that and you intend keeping the car for some time it may not be a bad idea to get a second key anyway.

It's one of my bugbears with second hand cars; only one key, who are these people that manage to lose all the spare keys?

Quick question related to this.......Is it cheaper to get a new key cut while you are in possession of one, as opposed to getting one cut after you've already lost it?

I have two keys at the moment, one each for myself and Mrs Shifty, so it's highly unlikely we'd ever lose both at the same time. But if we did, would it be dearer to get a new key then versus getting one cut tomorrow?

Presumably your key is the key and fob together type. If so, the fob is the expensive bit not the blade itself.
