An interesting conclusion from this study is that apparently the huge borophagine Epicyon haydeni (the largest known member of the dog family, which has been described as lion to grizzly bear sized) was apparently an ambush hunter, and not a pursuit predator like wolves or dholes today. This probably supports the idea that this sort of predator was outcompeted by big cats, since they would've occupied a similar niche.
