Second hand car declaring off the road

    Hi,
Just wondering could someone help with a couple of questions.
I searched boards.ie but can't find an exact answer.

I recently got a new company car. I also have my own private 3 litre car.
I want to keep my own no claims bonus up to date so I decided to get rid
of the 3 litre (as its €422 tax every 3 months) and get a small second hand 1 litre just to keep insurance up to date and possible use at some stage.
I will probably not drive the 1 litre car and probably just leave in my driveway.

Can I declare it off the road when I buy it second hand and if so how do I do that ? and also is it the same as when you own a car and declare it off the road that it has to be a minimum of 3 months or could it be declared off the road until such a time that you want to use it if you have just bought it second hand ? ie if I decide after 6 weeks of buying it and it being declared off the road can I use it and tax it then or des it have to be minimum 3 months same as a normal off the road declaration ?

    Thanks.

you can do it on line same place you tax your car on line.

How long can I declare the vehicle off the road for?

The minimum period is three calendar months, the maximum is twelve calendar months i.e. you cannot declare a vehicle off the road for either one or two months. The declaration must be for full calendar months, starting on the first day of a month and ending on the last day of a month.

Thanks but is that the same process even if you are buying second hand and declaring it off the road ?
And if so is it the same minimum 3 months ? Even if you have just bought second hand and never used on the road and don't know when you will use ?

Having said that you can put the car back on the road at any time by simply taxing it. In other words the 3 month and 12 month bit is a nonsense. Secondhand makes no difference but you only have (i think) 10 days from purchase to declare it off the road

Thats kind of what I mean.
For example if I buy a second hand car today.
And I declare it off the road for the "minimum 3 months.
But I decide around middle of February I want to drive it I can then go and tax it from February on ? Correct ?

You have 21 days from the date of sale to declare off road

Just in case you might suffer a minor brain fart on renewal...

Just basic 3rd party fire and theft. Fully comp and any extra cover won’t be of much use if it’s just sitting in your driveway! And offer to take the maximum excess the insurer will allow. This shouldn’t take much arguing.
