I like Golden Delicious apples.

I would like to plant two G.D. apple trees, but am curious about a few things, if anyone any experience with these.and could help...
Will they taste exactly like the ones I'd buy?
Do the trees look nice? Flowers, Autumn colour etc...I'd like to put them in a prominent position.
Are they very big?
Will they pollinate each other?
Do the apples store well?

they won't pollinate each other, you'll need another type of apple tree for that.

Golden Delicious do not ripen well in this country and only do reasonably well in southern UK.

That doesn't sound good. I would be wasting my time growing it so If they couldn't ripen properly. No interest in cooking apples.

Had anyone ever grown or seen one grown in Ireland?

I planted a golden delicious apple tree but it consistently just produces small fruit that I have not seen much point in harvesting. I just put it down to being planted in an exposed site and getting too much competition from the raspberries that are doing well all around it, but maybe Srameen is right and it does not do well in this country.

As to the question on pruning apples I posted a video when I was pruning a gala apple tree last week that might be helpful. I found they seem to fruit well but still suffer from my vegetable garden being very exposed to strong westerly winds.

They have loads of different native varieties and can advise on which is best for your part of the country. If you're not in a mad rush to plant then I suggest you go down to one of their apple days later in the year and you can taste dozens of different varieties of delicious Irish apples.

Try a grafted one with 2 varieties maybe.

I have a James Grieve and Elstar blend. The good weather last summer really ripened them beautifully - they were huge but a bit sour other years.

Maybe one with sweeter fruit would be better if you want to pick an apple for your lunch every day as we can't rely on a superb summer I guess.
