Hi. I have read that the 1.6tdi engines have some issues like egr, dpf, cam chain.
What is the one fitted in the mk7 2013 on like. Have these issues been solved and did they change to a cam belt?

The 1.6 TDI never had a chain, they were always belt.

The EA189 1.6 in the Mk6 Golf was fond of injectors and EGR'S, the EA288 1.6 in the Mk7 is far improved in that regard, they are much much less prone to these types of failures. The biggest issues with the Mk7 1.6 are probably cooling related, they are fond of water pumps and the coolant itself can congeal from silica contamination in some of them which takes the heater matrix with it but the engines themselves are actually pretty decent. The belt interval on the Mk7 engines is 210k kms, no age limit.

Are those still 5 speed in manual?

Thanks. Just noticing that all these mk7 golfs have an electronic hand brake. If I remember rightly these used to give expensive issues when first introduced. Are they still troublesome.

You still see the odd switch giving trouble in them tbh but a new switch is only around €40. The actual mechanics of the system on the Mk7 is fairly robust, again, much improved over the likes of the B6 Passat systems that gave endless, expensive bother.

    Cheers

Sounds good. Anything else to watch out for on them?

Do you know what is the 11-14 Focus 1.6 cdti like in comparison?

    We have a 181 at work and it’s 5 speed. It’s the lower powered 1.6 (90PS I think)

The 1.6's are all 5 speed. Seems fine in them. At slow speeds/ town driving it feels like you're indefinitely shuffling between first and second and never in the right gear but once you're on the move, they're fine. 2200rpm @ 120kmh.

They’re not that economical on the motorway though.

Had one of those MK3 Focuses and moved to a MK7 Golf. The 2L engine though. The Focus gave me a good bit of trouble, clutch went which was a 700 replacement. Had to replace all the wheel bearings and do the timing belt. Then the boot started letting in water. This is all anecdotal and I was probably just unlucky.

In terms of driving, I test drove a few 1.6 MK7s and they were quite similar to the 1.6 focus, grand, but won't be in anyway exciting. The internals of the Golf are way nicer. It just feels like a better car. More solid, better plastics, more comfortable all around. I really like the auto hold handbrake, the auto lights and the auto wipers.

I test drove a 1.6 MK7 and then the 2.0L (6 speed), one after the other and there was no comparison in terms of driving experience. I had to have the 2.0L. There's a nice wee bit of poke in it.

Thanks. Yeah I'd imagine the 2.0 is better. Not sure how the insurance would go with my young lad added. Have to check it out.
