Oh yes. Drastic action from the mods to remove comments completely.

Yep. T'is a discussion forum, after all.

I'm all for that kind of thinking.

If lads could refrain from non stop bickering in there it would be ok. Unfortunately it usually descends into one video of an accident on a roundabout and then 12 pages of 2 lads arguing about how to use a roundabout and then a hape of smart arses saying "any videos lads?".

We could look at it again though on a trail basis maybe, if there's interest.

I look forward to it :)

Also I know its a bit more effort for you guys and we're all busy but would it be possible to ban the bickerers for two weeks instead of preventing comments on the forum completely.
If not I understand but it would be nice if not all of us didn't get punished beause of a few idiots :)

    Thanks for reviewing mods :)

    No.

Turns into a never ending 'discussion'. Often times this 'discussion' is akin to trying to convince a flat-earther that the Earth is indeed NOT flat.

Other times it's someone making a snarky remark on the person's video, criticising their driving or pointing out a mistake that's easy point out in hindsight.

Both of these lead to less and less videos being posted because people frankly can't be arsed deal with those on high horses or those that contribute nothing but vitriol to the thread.

I would bet the amount of time a mod needs to spend monitoring that thread is huge and just not worth it when a devoted 'videos only' will suffice.

well then, you have a second thread where the video is copied to and the discussion takes place there.

As others have said, its a discussion forum. It does get a bit tedious when it goes to bickering but thats where I leave it for a few days and see what's new after a while.

In less than 24 hours and we have 70% in favor.

    Mods will this be granted?

I think comments should be allowed.

If you do post a video. Expect it to be analysed/criticised. If that's a problem for you don't post it. I've saved videos on my cam before and when I looked back at them I realise I probably overreacted a bit and chose not to post them here.

If you don't want to read the comments just DON'T read them. It takes about three seconds to scroll down through the page to see posts with comments or videos.

If someone disagrees with you or hurts your feelings just ignore it and move on.
If someone is personally abusive to you use the report post button. We all should use the report post button if we see someone receiving personal abuse that's not what these forums are about. You can disagree with someone without being abusive.

It is a discussion forum. Lets have the ability to discuss.

No, this is a comments only thread.

Anyone who dares to post a dashcam video will be banned for 24 hours

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

One off comments etc. should be allowed but if it turns into the usual roundabout drivel then those who want to discuss that sort of thing should be booted to another thread.

Shutting down discussion was lazy moderating. Just deal with the numpties for back and forward bickering. Hand out bans from the thread for such behaviour.

I know modding is voluntary and nobody wants to sit on a thread all day, so just get rid of the culprits instead of killing the vibe of the thread.

You're in the wrong lane there. Left lane for 12 o'clock or before.

I take offence to that, lazy would be locking the thread completely. Cleaning up the thread every single day was a complete pain in the neck. People saying "just hand out warnings and it wont happen again" are completely living in dreamland.

I'm sorry my view on the matter offends you, but that's how it appears to me.

The boring, endless and tiresome circular arguments were normally carried on by two people. Warn once and then permaban from the thread. Why punish everyone for the actions of a few knobheads?

I will close this thread tomorrow and depending on the result will open/leave the Dashcam thread.

Ah come on! It wasn't every day at all. Anyone posting videos will always be scrutinized and negative comments will always be there. Every forum is the same. It's the back and forth for days that was a pain and that didn't happen every day, every few weeks more like.

how about a rule that says you may comment on the video but not comment on other comments. Wouldn't that stop the back and forth arguments that are completely unwinnable ?

Oh ffs. Sure you might as well stick to banning comments altogether.

Of course they should. Doing something like that to a thread is pure laziness. Moderate it properly, or let someone else do it that wants to do it, but these blanket bans just scream 'not bothered'.

But can you comment on other comments that comment on the comment or comments your comment commented upon.

I've noticed nobody is posting their own video's in the thread since comments were disabled but I voted no as all those pages of waffle and crap about cyclists and the ROTR is infuriating!

There’s a sincere lack of appreciation for the mods and the effort involved in their roles being shown here. Motors is a good, clean, easy to use forum and the mods have a lot to do with that. Accusing them of being lazy is a tad unfair to say the least.

I vote for comments being allowed as this is, as pointed out, a discussion forum. However, I would also favour longer bans for any numpties that just don’t known when to quit and start derailing the thread. One warning, then a ban, and the thread can move on. Any poster with any sense at all should be able to avoid being banned - it’s not that bloody difficult.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,997 ✭✭✭McCrack

So I got 24 hour ban from Motors because I agreed with a poster in the dash cam thread that the no comment rule was making the thread boring etc

I'm glad to see that the popular consensus is in fact comments should be allowed. It's incredibly restrictive to not allow people comment and argue points on the videos uploaded
