Old Eircom Customer

I'm no longer a customer of eircom/eir, but I still use the email along with gmail.  I recently received
a nasty email from someone looking for money, stating they had my password and were going access my computer etc., etc.  I went to change my email password, but couldn't gain access..am I out of luck?

We are aware of a series of unsolicited emails in circulation. Further information on this can be found here. I would recommend deleting the email you received and blocking the sender.

Did they include a password familiar to you?
When websites are hacked and passwords were weakly encrypted if at all they sell this data on to scammers like this. Who then try to blackmail you with such things as "had access to your webcam" etc
Always good practice to use individual passwords for every site you use and never use the same password twice - use your browser to store passwords or one of the multitude of password managers.
And always a good practice to constantly change your passwords.
