Negotiating the price of an engagement ring

    Hi

I know quite a few on here are experienced with this. Going ring shopping with the OH soon. What sort of mark downs can I expect in todays market. Eg if a ring is priced at 4k, should I say 3.5k/5k , should I say 4.5k etc? I'd imagine in a buoyant market the discounts have to be requested. Also, I'd be using Card - should I consider Cash?

I've done a bit of research and can't see much difference in quality (online) between the likes of Rocks and less glamourous outlets like Loyes (which seem great). So I'm intent on trying the lower key jewelers.

I just want to know what way to approach the seller (given my OH will be there drooling over the one she wants :) ). The money isn't the end of the world, her happiness is most important but just want her to get the best for the money

    TIA

Honestly in the main jewelers we found it difficult to get them to move too much on price. There were some who'd offer a couple of hundred off but the main place we got any difference in price was when looking at antique rings as there's a bit more wiggle room on them. Just my experience of it. Also a lot will ask your budget before even showing you any rings at all. We tried to not give budget but most were insistent as they weren't going to show anything outside that. Led me to believe in those that there wouldn't be a discount forthcoming.

Enjoy the experience though - we found it a bit of fun looking!

Take a weekend away to Antwerp it's a nice city, this shop is well trusted with a lot of friends I know including myself. You should easily cover the price of the trip and a small car with the savings.

That's where my sister got her ring.

The art of the haggle is where the strength lies. If it's 4K and you go 3.5 then you'll be lucky to pay less than 3.7/8k.
If that's an engagement ring what's the wedding ring cost?

I felt like we'd bought in the safest shop in Antwerp, got a really good hands on lesson in how not to get scammed over there by the owner. If I ever needed a diamond again I'd go back to him. When we had to get the band adjusted he had me sit down beside the guy doing it to make sure the stone wasn't switched, common occurrence according to him. Doubt most people would even know it's happened.
There was an ambassador and his wife in there the same time as us, knew we were in the right place, valued in Dublin when we got back for insurance and was over double what we paid.
He even came over to meet one of my friends in Dublin with the ring they'd picked.

Typically wedding rings cost a lot less, as its usually does not have any large stones.

Mens wedding rings typically cost a similar amount to womens, sometimes more as the band tends to be thicker.

Depends on the materials of course.
