Cavan (-Clones-Monaghan-and beyond) Greenway

In an announcement of funds yesterday, an allocation was made for the "Cavan Town Railway Greenway".

For info, the railway line used to run from Mullingar to Crossdoney to Cavan (Railway road beside mc Carrons) past the back of Lorretto and onto Butlersbridge then Clones and beyond.
Theres also a branch from Crossdoney to Killeshandra.

The section which will be built seems to be part or all of the Cavan to Butlersbridge section, as this is what the council was tendering for engineering services for last year

Its very vague whats planned with this grant, but given its only a max grant of €200,000, even a first stub from town to Loretto would be a useful start.

At least they have finally put a footpath from town to Loretto.
I suppose a Greenway could head from Loretto on out to Avalon and on via Derryheen.
The railway line ran along the old Butlersbridge road (making it necessary to cross the N3 at that point) and some of the old telegraph poles still are in use for the 'phone lines.
