Medical expenses

    HI,
We filled in medical expenses for the first time for 500 euro last week, just got the p21 online and it's all balanced and no mention of the 500 for non routine dental work.
I called revenue and the chap said the 100 euro tax credit was showing on the system and to keep an eye on the bank account but he seemed to not be sure about what he was saying.

Should it not be mentioned on the p21?
On mypaye the p21 is done and available to view but the form 12 just says submitted not sure if that's relevant.

Thanks in advance for any info

On the P21 form you should see the €100 (20% of €500) as a tax credit on the second page - Panel 4 Tax Credit.

It's not showing in panel four, the chap said it wouldn't show up on the p21 but that doesn't make sense does it? He said he can see it on the system so expect it in the bank but I'm not convinced.
I'll call them again tomato .thanks

When you were in your online account, did you request a p21 separately to filing in the form 12?

What the guy on the phone was saying was probably both correct and incorrect. He should not have told you to keep an eye on the bank account, there's likely no refund due.

Your P21 balanced, and the health expenses did not show on panel 4. This is likely because you did not pay enough or any tax during the year in order to be due a refund. Health expenses and other credits will only show on the P21 if they were used in calculating your liability. If they weren't used in the calculation, they won't show on the P21 at all, and if they don't show on the P21 at all, it's likely because you did not pay enough tax to be due a refund.

You can only be due a refund of tax where you have actually paid tax.

According to your P21, how much tax and USC were you deducted in 2018, and what other credits are showing in panel 4?

strangely not letting me look at the p21 now so going to call when i get the chance today.I cant give figures as it wont let me see it now but the jist is

income around 30000 a year in the tax band of paying 20 percent.
paye, prsi and usc definitely go out every month only figure off the top of my head is usc was 756.

tax credits in panel four where my own and spouses as stay at home parent plus home carers.

Ill update when i get an answer, I think your probably right that we arnt getting it back just wish they where clear one way or another.

rather annoying as its for orthodontic work which we will be paying thousands for, for two children and the dentist banged on about oh everyone gets 20 percent back through tax.

    problem figured out

Ive actually figured out the issue and im a bit of an idiot but apparently between all the tax credits we have we dont pay tax  well not paye just prsi and usc
our tax amount is 5980.04 at the end of the year and our tax credits at the end of the year where 6150.00 so we paid none.

The guy on the phone yesterday must not have realised that either.

    Thanks again

That's what I was saying above, albeit in a longwinded way!

Yes you were completely right it never occurred to me that there was no tax paid due to all our credits, thanks again for the help.
