Second death in 24 hrs in Canary Wharf, London

Just saw this earlier this morning - a second man has died after "falling from a height" in Canary Wharf, London's financial district. Of course we don't know much more about their deaths but can put two and two together here.

This kind of incident sadly isn't uncommon in London, but it made me think about what a difficult time of year this can be for so many people. Back into a stressful job after a probably boozy / socially busy holiday period, facing into a long year of pressure and anxiety and the dread and fear of it all with no end in sight.

I'm a bit prone to the January blues myself and the last week has been tough, back at a job that is getting more and more stressful in a city abroad without the immediate support of family and friends back home. I tend to ruminate a lot this time of year and feel a bit hopeless about the many many changes I want to make in my life, not knowing where or how to start. It can be a lonely old month too.

I'm lucky in that i'm a pretty healthy person and have the sufficient coping mechanisms to get through, but I can totally empathise with people who get to a very dark place with it all too.

Anyone else struggle with this? Hope you're all taking care of yerselves folks

Unless you're on the ground floor, yes.

In which case resigning is definitely a more efficient option.

First incident doesn't really sound like suicide, more of a freak accident. Though the lack of specifics when such accidents are reported, does always ring bells with me.

Time of year, the downtime of Xmas causing built-up stress in returning to work and the after-effects of too much alcohol over the period can unfortunately leave many in a dark state.

Anyone looking at this incident and feeling like they can relate should realise that this doesn't solve any problems, merely leaves them behind for everyone else to deal with. Whatever it is that seems lost or unbearable, can be dealt with.

How you feel now is temporary, even though it feels like it's not. Death on the other hand, is always permanent.

Financial services is quite bad for this stuff. The highly-driven people who get into this pin their entire identity and sense of self-worth to money and career. If they lose either, they see no future. Unfortunately I think this is going to be a spectacularly devastating year for suicide in the UK.

Agreed. The stakes are so high in these jobs. Ridiculous hours, big salary but small mistakes can cost someone their career.

I used to work an overnight shift in central London and would be on a tube home every morning at 6am, surrounded by young lads in suits that looked like they were just out of college, looking lost and knackered, either leaving the office or heading in again for another mammoth shift. I'd say it's easy to lose perspective on the bigger picture when you're working hamster wheel shifts and worried to take time off for fear of losing out on promotions etc.

    Bitcoin investors?

If you looked at any Bitcoin price chart you'd see that the big crash happened between Decemeber 2017 and February 2018. So it would be a fairly delayed reaction to that.

I try to bunker down here for the next two months with a library of books, music and film. Try to stay away from the radio/TV/media as much as I can. For the last couple of months everyone is on those media outlets forcing the sale of disposable rubbish, now once it hits January the angle the TV shows spout- "What were ye at?? Pay yer bills and pay them now you idiots" You go from seeing adverts of people drowning in perfume at December to adverts of a people drowning in a sea of insolvency the minute January 1st hits the TV screen. Best kill your television stations all year round I think.
Also good to try to get as much sleep as possible while its dark. At least the days will be getting longer soon out in the real world.
