APN settings - different SIM gets different speed?

    Hi,

This may be a bit long, please bare with me.
Over Christmas I bought a 30 day SIM only 50 Gb plan, as our normal bill pay allowance of 50 Gb is always used up with the extra people in the house during this time. When I took out the bill pay SIM (which only gets 3G signal), and put the new 30 day SIM in. At first I had difficulties with 'no connection' available but I changed the APN settings on the router to those outlined on eir.ie and the connection worked.
The odd thing was, with the new APN settings and new SIM the connection was no a much faster 4G connection. When I put the old SIM back in it dropped back down to a working but poorer speed 3G connection. I switched the APN profile back and it stayed on the 3G connection on the old SIM.

Here's my question then; why is our bill play plan only ever receiving 3G speeds (ok), but when I switched to the new SIM we were always getting nice, fast 4G connection and speed?

Feels like we are getting a little ripped off here.

    Hi Gotfoodforphil,

Sometimes when it comes to SIMs they can become outdated. The newer SIMs are better equipped to deal with faster networks such as 4G. If you go into your local eir store and request a new SIM and ask for a SIM swap so you can keep your number this should resolve this issue for you.
