Record of Income for Revenue

I'm a self employed service provider, and am just wondering if I need to have a proof of income for my tax return. At the moment I keep all receipt stubs from sales as support, but I was wondering if this is necessary; would entries in a sales ledger be enough without invoices/receipt stubs backing up the figures?
On the rare occasions when I visit my GP, I am given a receipt written on headed paper, but my GP doesn't seem to keep any stub to record her income. So I figured she must just be using a sales ledger with no backup. it would be a lot easier if I could do this too!

    Thanks,
    j

Invoices generated by your accounts package or if you are using a manual receipt book then your receipt book itself. Your invoices/receipt book must be sequentially numbered and any errors/deleted etc ones must be recorded. The payments received for your services provided must be matched against the invoices/receipt book by keeping track of your income received. All your original books of entry must be kept for 6 years.
