Media Center alternative to Kodi

I have an android box which I have a hard drive connected to

I use Kodi to play files from the hard drive

I find the layout ok , I much prefer the look of Plex and Emby but looking into it seems they only work via network hard drive

Is there any way around this to get to work or is there similar apps to them

I don't use Kodi for streaming as I use Netflix etc for streaming content.

Any advice appreciated or feel free to move to another forum

    Thanks in advance

The only thing I use is Kodi so I can't recommend an alternative.
If it's the layout you don't like, maybe try a different skin. There's lots of options and it looks completely different.

If it's just for playing media files, do you need a media centre? Everything that's free is either split from kodi, or uses kodi as the bench mark.

Want it to be visually good , covers , TV/film descriptions. I suppose Netflix feel to it, as others use it in house so want it to be as user friendly as possible

Will have a look Into different skins , have to upgrade my box as it's android 4.4 and doesn't support newest Kodi

Try Titan, good customizable skin with lots of different views included.

If you use your hard drive connected to a PC with a DLNA server like Serviio or Plex, then they can do all the automation to get the metadata / artwork and Kodi only has to detect the feed (which is does really well). Then it's a matter of finding a simple skin to use and it will even look great with just Estuary IMO.

Bundle this with some torrent / RSS automation and you'll have a tidy setup (use to have this myself until my server fan went and resorted to online cache torrents). I will gladly switch back to this soon.
