How much work do you actually get done?

Be honest. In an 8 hour working day how much of that do you spend doing proper work.

Started my first job out of college in a big enough architecture firm. After morning emails and 2-4 hours hours of solid work, it seems a majority of the day is spent chatting, making coffee or "helping" colleagues (leads to chatting). And meetings with clients which leads to making coffee and chatting after business is discussed.

Similarly while in college, majority of the year would spend 2 or 3 hours doing proper work. Then piss about the studio socializing

    What's your work day like?

I work in software support. Today I have closed about 10 cases. probably about 2.5 hours work. Make several cups of tea and take an hour lunch. some days i can close 30 cases and have very little time for dossing. you gotta take the good with the bad I suppose.

The coffee machine in our offices works harder than anyone in the office. It should get an employee of the year award.

Worked from home today. Work and conference calls from 9:30 to 11:10. Take down Xmas tree and put all Xmas decorations in attic. Conference call from 12:00 to 12:30. Made a few coffees during this time.
12:30 to 13:15 "lunch". 13:15 to 14:30 emails and more work. 14:30 to 15:10 telephone interview for another job.
I am currently having a cup of Yes, checking boards, personal email, doing a few chores til I pick up one of kids at 16:00. Will work from 16:20 to 17:30. Probably do final check if emails etc at 19:00 and log off about 19:30.

    Fairly normal work day.
