2nd Sky Q - without internet

    Hi folks,

just installed a 55" for a friend yesterday and found it had integrated sat tuner so happy days, I took out hte ferguson ariva that was supplying SAT/TERR feeds to the old TV. Tuned up SAT quickly but nothing found on the TERR search. Perhaps the integrated TERR tuner is not as good as the one in the box but eitherway, looking like an better UHF antenna (or relocation of existing might give us a result)

However, they have Sky Q in the main room and would love the same in the second room but need internet. They live just outside Oldtown ( behind the airport - between swords and Ashbourne) and have had no luck in recent years with their efforts to secure any type of BB to the house. I asked sky what the cost of 2 x HD boxes would be (independent feeds from LNB which would need to be changed I think ??) and they're talking €330 for the 2 boxes. Too much. Was looking at SAT BB as an option. Any suggestions ?
I'm guessing that the secon Sky Q box would not need a massive connection in terms of speed ?

TERR = Terrestrial, have you an antenna connected?

Yes. I'd installed an Ariva combo which had been fine for years.

An additional SKy Q box wouldnt require internet. The two boxes use their own 5Ghz to connect to each other (they also provide a booster box if needed)

I have been checking this and I'm getting mixed information. Apparently, you need internet connection at initial setup / linking the 2 boxes stage. After that, some are saying that you do not need internet (but at the expense of box sets ans sky store) but channels all seem fine. Some are saying that if the boxes are linked and you power off the mini, you will need internet to rejoin both units. Again, once linked, they are on their own 5ghz mesh type network, independent of internet. Would really appreciate some hard factual data on this from SKY Q users.

Best route if you have no ISP is to just use your own home router to act as the bridge between both boxes. Decent routers on Amazon for around 35euro delivered.

But what benefit would that give me? They link themselves, but internet is needed for the initial handshake to back end servers and then periodically (apparently)

AIUI Sky Q mini box(es) need internet connection at setup and then once every month (presumably to check subscription status).

Presumably a mobile phone hotspot will suffice to do that check if there's a 3G or 4G signal at their house.

That’s what I thought, but just need to find out some definitive MIN speeds required for setup and maintenance. I’d guess 3-4mg would be sufficient?.

What is the difference between having sky plus or sky q, which is best

I got the upgrade from sky + to sky q 1tb, but really I see nothing other that the recording of 3 programmes while watching another, flimsy remote control, no book going with this new box, it is going to be a bit of time to know all of the features since it did not include a book

Sky Q is a big step up from Sky plus box.

    Better menus and functionality.

The reason there is no 'book' is because it's all contained on the box itself.

All help on Q is interactive on the Q box.

Press the ? Button (bottom right on the remote) once or twice and it will give you help in any area that you are in.

I lost internet in my house for 10 weeks after storm damage and have SkyQ as well as a mini box.

After a few weeks the mini required an internet connection, presumably for authentication so i tethered my main box to my 4g mobile and it happily came back to life. Happened again the following month and again just enabled by hotspot & resolved.

Not sure how much data it used, but its only a handshake so doubt if its much.

Theres a remote help/tips/tricks section under the help label in the main menu, saving paper & the environment and such...
