I'm looking to buy a new car this year, but I can't decide between the Audi A1 (2019) and the VW Golf. Granted the VW is a little bit bigger than the Audi, but I'm more concerned about longevity and value for money.

Any owners of either cars have any stories? All and every advice welcome!

The Audi, purely because could stick "Sharon" after the model number.

You mention longevity. Much more likely to outgrow an A1. It's a small car.

The A1 is based on the 2009 model Polo. The Golf is more advanced and better value.

I think the small Audi’s like that are a bit pointless. The “quality” isn’t even there from what I’ve seen of them. Interiors tend to be spartan and plasticky unless you spend big on options.

A new model Polo, Ibiza, Fiesta would be far better value.

The Golf is from a class up and is therefore a bigger car.

There is also a new model Golf being launched later this year.

Brand new car and value for money don't go together. Buy what you like they'll both depreciate and in fairness wont be a whole pile different to drive.

If you were to buy one of the run-out models of the present Golf, you may get some extra equipment or accessories as they often load on the options to help sell off remaining stock prior to a new model launch.

Worth checking out if you're not bothered with having the very latest version.

And if that's the case then I wouldn't buy a brand new one at this stage of its life.. Just wait a bit for a pre reg or ex demo model that will already have taken a knock on the new purchase price. No point in paying full price for an old run out model as when you go to trade it back in it will be worth a good deal less than a similar reg newer model.

As an owner of a 142 reg AI 1.4 TFSI I would not buy the new A1. It has a heck of a lot of missing quality in the trim inside. Would I trade my A1, never, lovely car in the twisty roads of Spain. Next car is a Q2 for me.

The out going Golf would be better value but I could not see myself buying a 3 cylinder 1 litre so I recommend a 2nd half A1 or Golf 1.2 TFSI.

Golf without question I've always been amazed at the used prices of a1s especially in the uk sometimes dearer than a3s and a4s

@OP Why just them two cars? There is loads of other cars. The current Renault Megane can look really good in the right colour. The Honda Civic is another choice. There is also a new Corolla dew out that is supposed to drive really well as well as the Ford Focus and the Mazda 3. Loads of choice.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
