    Hi lads,

Selling an MF 390 which has been owned by ourselves since it was purchased new. Never used on the road so the old fella in his wisdom decided not to register or tax the tractor. What's the name of the form from the motor tax office I need to fill in? Going by what I've read on older threads if I also submit a change of ownership form and get the main dealer to verify it that should do the job.

Just want to know if I'm going about it the right way. Sale of the tractor hinges on getting it registered. Thanks

It's common enough, alot of equipment used in the mining and quarrying industries wouldn't be registered for road use. Have seen jeeps and pickups.

As a side note, how are you selling your 390? Privately or a trade in? Is she selling for much?

Could you register it then as a 191?

Some of the lads in the trade would have a tax book for a 390?

Yeah was thinking that might be an option to buy one from within the trade. Other option might be to fill out a lost documentation form even though it was never registered and get a letter from a dealer stating the year the tractor was purchased.

You won't get a 191 reg. Tractor did yard work mostly so it never ventured too far. It's sold now just need to get it registered. Thanks for the help.

Yes, common enough. We have a tractor here that was only registered when it was 10 years old. We had all the paperwork from main dealer from day one, but as we’ve only a small farm on one block, we never needed to bring the tractor out into the road, it just fell through the cracks. Tractor is 20yrs old now and properly registered now but still hasn’t seen a public road.

Can you insure a non registered tractor? I didn’t think you could.

I cannt fully remember as it’s so long ago. I’m guessing you’ll need to give the insurance company a number plate if you want it road legal or a chassis number at a minimum for field work.

We've the quad insured for the road on the chassis No. seems to be alright, I'm sure a tractor would be the same

It was one of the last jobs Phil Hogan did as minister that all agricultural tractors, combines , had to be registered lads were going around for years with them not taxed.

Fbd told me last year that they’d insure a tractor on a chassis number once it had fully functioning road legal lighting.

How did this work out for you? Were you able to register the tractor?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 215 ✭✭Bazzer007

The buyer baulked the day after and ol lad who didn't give two sh*ts about having a logbook bought the tractor a few days later so didn't need to get one in the end. Have since heard of a few lads going to the local Garda station and filling in a form for a new book. Never answered your question; sold the tractor for €10k and it was a private sale.

You could always insure a tractor off the chassis number.
Problem with that and the quad too is they arent legal to drive on the roads.
    No registration plate or tax.
Quads are insured afaik by most people for the theft aspect.
I bought a quad 6 years ago and took it for a spin on the road . Within 4 or 5 miles i was stopped by an unmarked garda car.
The guard seemed quite disappointed to find it was registered insured and taxed.
He also revealed that he didnt know you could register one
