    Hi there,
I looking for some advice I'm thinking of changing the car to a volvo s40 d3 2litre diesel, it's a nice looking car but I've never owned a volvo so I know nothing about it's reliability or how economical it would be. There is 140k in kilometres on the clock, if anyone has owned one I would appreciate your views

Had a 2007 D2, at that mileage the timing belt was due on the D2. The brake pads and possibly rotors if not done will be due. At 196k the clutch and release bearing started playing up so I got rid of it.

All depends on the age, servicing and of course the low low price you will be paying for it. I am handy with cars but the Volvo I did not find cheap. It is a lovely comfortable car and I really do miss those leather seats!

Never had a diesel but had a 01 S40 1.8i petrol for a few years and currently have a 07 S60 2.0T petrol for about 4 years. Current car has 260k km on the clock so 140k is nothing to be concerned about depending on the age and if driven appropriately for a diesel (not constantly used for short trips up and down to the shops).

Great spec cars and great value on the second hand market as they depreciate like a stone for some reason. Very reliable in my experience, I had problems in the end with the S40 concerning the injector pressure pump causing it to loose power which wasn't economic to replace. Volvo parts are relatively expensive. Was quite good on fuel since it was GDI but had to clean out the EGR value a couple of times over the years which was a pain.

Current S60 has been running well (touch wood) and only thing I've replaced over the years is the battery and front wheel bearing although could do with changing the MAF sensor at present since it can occasionally rough idle especially after an hour or two stuck in traffic. It's hard enough on petrol drinking about 7.5l/100km but don't do much mileage and most of that would be city driving.

Would certainly consider another Volvo when changing again.

It's a 2011 with a full service history, it's in a dealers, I had thought about the timing belt but will mention it when I go to look at it next weekend, If it's due they can do it. They are looking for around 8k for it so it seem reasonable.

I think the 2.0 litre D3 back then would have been a 5 cylinder Volvo engine which was a fairly reliable unit. Has a nicer sound off it too being 5 cylinder.

If it's the black one on carzone then it's a UK import so make sure to double check it's service history. It looks clean. Also make sure it comes with a second key as a replacement is a main dealer job only afaik and they cost around €300. Volvo parts can be expensive especially if you have to get them from a main dealer.

Thanks I don't see it on Carzone it's on carsireland.ie and Brogans motors website. Thanks for the advice. How would you know it's an import?

Other half had a 2007 2litre S40 for a few years, very comfortable but gave plenty of trouble and expensive for parts, never liked it myself, Peugeot engine

The speedo dial has mph on the outside and kmph on the inside. Irish cars would have kmph dials only.

I had a 2006 S40 myself at one time and it had a good few niggly things during that time. They got a facelift in 2007 and again in 2010 which resulted in a lot of improvements.

If it's the 5-cyl diesel, it will suffer a little in economy compared to an equivalent 4-cyl engine, but compensates by torquiness and sounding really really nice compared to a 4-cyl (for a diesel!). Is it auto or manual?

I have an S60 D3 (5-cyl 2012 unit) myself at the moment and find it a great drive - engine is nice and urgent when necessary, car itself rides very smoothly.

I think timing belts have 180k kms and 10 year life - also an auxiliary belt with 90k kms and 10year life.
