Just booked NCT retest in Donegal Town for next Tuesday12.50, which was confirmed online & by email, but text confirmation says 3.05 on same date.  So 2/3 majority for 12.50, but can't ring them till Monday - any thoughts?

Log on to their website and see what time your appointment is there for a start.

Alright lads, quick one, hard to find an answer. Am I right in saying my car has a 31 Jan 19 due date for NCT I don't have to do it in January? I can do it in Feb right? I am away until mid feb so as long as I have a date booked I cant get pulled on the road in Feb can I?

No, it's illegal to drive without an NCT unless you are driving home with a minor fail or its just come off an unconnected island.

You can do it 3 months in advance so there's no excuse for not having a valid NCT.

I don't think I fully understand your question but if you're asking if you can drive with an out of date NCT but have a test booked the answer is no, you can't. The car can and will be taken off you if you're pulled and you don't have a valid NCT.

    Edit: Also 3 penalty points.

Okay lads, sound, I just didn't think it was 100 percent clear on the RSA site as it is cars first NCT. I'll book it and get someone to bring it down for me.

    Good thinking wonski - thanks.
I logged in again, but the only choice I could see re my retest was Reschedule or Cancel.  Maybe the Reschedule button would show me my booking, but I wasn't sure if the original booking stays there in that case, until we do some further actions.  (My cert's already 3 days out of date, with delayed parts etc, and I don't want to risk it longer than I have to!).

Jim Gazebo; perhaps you were thinking of tax, re having a month to do it?  (At least the NCT timing is simple - grey areas when it comes to safety could be a bad idea).

There's no month for tax. If the Gardai or parking warden wanted to they can fine you the day after your tax expires. You don't have to pay penalties if you tax within the month.

    Thanks Del2005 - think I was a bit confused.

What confused me was the site saying you can do it in advance if you like i.e the 90 days. I thought that kind of meant it was up to you so in my situation it would have been easier to leave it till February. I have it booked now though so no worries. To be fair, a garda who pulls you for no disc having it paid already would want to be a jobsworth.

Join the club - the government websites and forms have improved a lot in recent years, but here are still ambiguities (I always seem to find them!).

That's the trouble with instructions written by insiders - it can be hard for them to remember what info/questions are needed, and in what order (they should use complete novices for testing).

Oh yes, and I’ve just remembered getting fined once for a tax disc 2 days out of date, and that was years ago (pre internet access).

I explained to the magistrate that I’d had to wait for a lodged cheque to clear first, had no thoughts of evading the tax, which was impossible anyway, had sent off the form & cheque about a week ago, and the disc might might be waiting on my doormat for all I knew...  ‘So it’s taxed?’, he said. ‘Well, I don't know at what point they become taxed, legally - their forms don’t say….’. Heavy sigh, rubber stamp, £20 fine (the minimum I think).

I think he was fed up with whatever jobsworth added the case to his workload.  ( Probably our local New Broom, dubbed ‘The Sheriff'). (The disc had arrived when I got home).

And the stakes are higher now of course!

Re the retest, I rang them this morning and they confirmed it was the email that had the right time.  (I tried to warn them that their text was wrong, but who knows if anyone will take any notice).

Perhaps the 3:05 appointment was an older text message for a previous booking?

Good thinking, BHP. Unfortunately I can't double check that (having deleted those texts once the time was confirmed).
