Question: Cleaning oil uptake filter in 2002 1.4 Petrol VVTI Corolla

Planning to change the oil in my 02 1.4 Petrol VVTI Corolla during next week (250,000 km on the clock). Mechanic friend of mine told me that it could be worth taking off the sump and cleaning both the sump and the oil uptake filter with brake cleaner since the filter can tend to get blocked in these engines which can eventually result in the engine getting partially starved of oil.

Is this worth doing or is just changing the oil (and oil filter) sufficient?

If it is worth doing is it a job I could feasibly do myself? I have a Haynes manual for the car and it paints it as a fairly straightforward job but I know from one or two experiences that this can be deceiving :D I've changed cam cover gaskets, oil and filters and done bits and pieces with the radiator in the past but that's about it.

In my experience dropping the sump to clean the oil pickup is a very good idea on the VVTi engine, carbon collects in it due to the design and I have seen several engines that have failed because of it.
The subframe will need to be dropped to remove the sump and you may want a lift to do it properly.
