HI I am taking a few days hols towards the end of Jan we will be in Killarney from Monday to Weds. I know there are 3 chargers, one fast charger literally a few hundred yards from the hotel. Anyone know if these chargers are very busy ?

What EV do you have? The fast DC charger in Killarney is CHAdeMO, so only good for Leafs.

30kw Leaf, I haven't been monitoring a lot but there seems to be no huge amount of usage

Kerry = Healy-Rae territory. So backwards that if they could ban EVs, they would :D

You can go to the excellent cpinfo.ie and look at the details for the charger, just get its charger ID from the ecars map. It shows a graph of the availability of the charger for every day for the last couple of years.

Presume you're staying on Muckross Road then? A popular area but I never took notice of the charge points there because they're connected to a petrol shop and car dealership.

The ones I know are rarely used are in the Glebe Car Park. Theres 4 points there afair. Less than a 10 minute walk from the Muckross Road.

    Hope that helps

Is that comment even necessary? Just makes you look like an idiot.

Well can you blame him really with some of the stuff Danny Healy-Rae came out with in the Dail about electric cars ? seriously, makes him sound like a complete fool !

Question still stands. Is it necessary just for the sake of having a dig when a person is seeking advice on chargers

@kerry37 - I didn't mean to insult you or every person in Kerry, and I obviously wasn't having a dig at any poster in this thread. But fact is that the people of Kerry overwhelmingly vote for parish pump backward muppets like the Healy-Raes.

There are 5 TDs for Kerry

Michael Healy-Rae got elected at the first count
Danny Healy-Rae got elected at the second count

All 3 others got elected at the 11th count

    Say no more...

And this has got absolutely nothing to do with what the OP is looking for and you're just serving your own purpose of getting digs in for some strange reason just cos you can. Its pathetic really

I’ve used the fast charger in Killarney twice recently. No problem at all with it. There are a good few Leafs floating around a locally but you should be fine to charge up if you are there for a few days.

Thank you all for the replies, yes staying on the Muckross road so looks like no issues in getting a charge locally

There is also a slow charger at the INEC where two cars can charge at the same time. You can leave your car there and walk back into town or the Killarney National Park.

Please stop with the politics, this is a charger thread.

Kerry badly needs a CCS , there is none at the moment .
Killarney would be ideal , on the Cork / Tralee route and perfect for all the visitors
    ESB ?
Ionity even ðŸ˜႒ would be perfect

Ah I think it was more meant as a bit of craic , people take everything too seriously these days.

If I got upset all the times the "Dubs" slagged me for being a bogger..........

Not long back from Killarney, very good experience overall. Got to Killarney with about 70 kms left this would have been 3.30ish on Monday. Snow on the mountains and cutting wind. Anyway did some shopping was going to charge in the Glebe car park but both spaces in use. Stopped off at the fast charger on the Muckross road (it showed as being out of order but I had rung ahead and was working perfectly. The hotel was a short walk so only left there till I got about 140.
We went back to the town for dinner I recommend Quinlans if you like fish.
Parked and charged the car in the Glebe car park There was one space free, after dinner and a nice walk car was at around 190 km. Mine was the only car there.
As a general comment and maybe its because Killarney is so compact I was surprised by how may Leafs I saw there.
Headed home was stuck behind a big truck from Cul Aodh and Macroom got home with 89 kms on the "clock"

When I was there with the i3 the AC was out and DC was only CHaDEMo so without the Rex it would have been on the back of a truck, shocking. Killarney could do with a few AC points too.

Carlow is also in bad need of CCS and knowing my luck they'll be charging for electricity by the time Carlow sees a CCS charger !

The whole charger situation is an utter joke. If they don't install at least 4 x chargers on new sites then they're taking the p1ss.

Recent post on Facebook says ESB due to upgrade the Carlow charger and it will also have CCS.

Pity they don't update their website, I ditched FB ages ago !

    From their site.

Ms Sayers also outlined ESB’s Climate Action Fund proposal for a high power charging network across Ireland. “Our proposal is to install over one hundred high powered (150kW) chargers at key locations on the national road network. These chargers which will typically provide an additional driving range of 100km in six minutes. In addition, subject to planning permission and approval, we intend to replace one hundred 50kW fast chargers which can recharge a car to 80 per cent in 25 minutes and to also refurbish up to 200 standard (22kW) chargers. We look forward to working with the Department on the next phase of the funding assessment.”

I presume that means upgrading to triple headed units and I take it to mean that they won't be 150 Kw , hopefully I'm wrong.

So is that 200 Chargers in total I wonder ? over how many years ?

They're really not giving us a lot of information.

I really can't see existing sites getting more than 50 Kw charger upgrades.

I am happy to see them to continue to support AC, I'm a big fan of AC. It will be interesting to see if the Leaf 60 gets the rumored 22 Kw charger, that would be amazing.

I was thinking last night if Cork had a serious football team again...say 3 years time and we head down to Killarney. Imagine say 7 Leafs 30s left with say 80km on reaching there, how do you organise if thats the word the rotate to charge etc before the game. Cost per charging might well be the answer

Cost per charging is indeed a good way to eliminate usage just because it's free but there'll still be queues and people will have to pay to queue until they install a lot more chargers.

I suspect the charging network will be updated long before Cork are serious football contenders again :D

I notice this morning that the E cars app is now showing Muckross Rd , killarney has been upgraded to CCS .
Possibly a new triple head unit .
Great news if so , finally CCS in Kerry !

Really , isn't that the Nissan garage ?

How easy is it to access that charger ? 24 x 7 ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭TOLLOT

It is indeed, Randles Nissan Garage .
    Afaik it’s 24/7 access
Pass it a few times a month so next time I’ll check
Think I’ve seen taxi charging there late in the evening at weekend.
Was kinda off my radar as Chademo only previously

There's also a petrol station at the site.

There is 24/7 access there - the shop itself is actually open 24 hours around.
There's a coffee shop/deli counter type basic restaurant and a self-service coffee/tea machine inside the shop.

No idea what charging unit is there but it was changed very recently - I want to say the start of last week. Either that or the end of the week before.

In terms of usage there has definitely been an noticeable increase in usage since the unit went in there initially - I'd pass it most days walking. It went from being noticeable when there was a car charging there to the current situation where there's probably a car charging there something like 1 out of every 3 times I pass it.

Tried out this tonight in Killarney . Brand new Efacace unit , triple head . 45 kw CCS it’s marked as . Good to see some CCS in killarney.
There was a leaf charging as I pulled up .

Interestingly the E cars app showed it as free , though he’d been there a while he said .

He finished up when I pulled in as he said he’ d enough to get where he was going .
we ended up having a good chat while I charged , he’d great stories .
I did notice though after he’ d left that the e cars app still showed the charger as free despite the fact I’d been plugged in for twenty min ish at that stage .
Noticed the same thing last Tuesday at Frankfield in Cork.
E cars showed the new triple unit there as free but there was clearly two leafs plunged in , one on AC
I was across the road in the coffee shop for 45 min so it had time to update.
Have historically found e cars fine on occupancy but twice this week now it might have lead one to believe chargers were vacant when the were not.
Is it because these units are new ?

    Has to be that.

They just havent updated their systems to take data from the new rapids and its showing the availability of the old rapid which is probably free alright but disconnected in a warehouse somewhere! :)
