Anyone have experience in registering an ex-army/govenment vehicle? are they set up as commercial vehicles or private? would it be possible to register as a private owner/pay motor tax as a private individual?

You can tax any vehicle privately, most of the commercially taxed vehicles on our roads should be taxed privately as they are not used exclusively for business.

yes the only thing is they don’t go off c02 so no cheap tax for anything after 08. Same as normal for the nct

Your head could be wrecked dealing with insurance companies trying to insure a privately taxed commercial vehicle or vice versa.

    Would I have to pay vrt? I believe it's a 2001.

I'd imagine so if it's classed as a private vehicle for motor tax.

It'll still need to be CVRTd annually as the vehicle class can't be changed. You can change any vehicle to private tax and you will need a commercial insurance policy which has private use included.

If it's Irish registered I doubt it, as the government charges VAT and other taxes when doing internal transactions. The only reason why you would need to pay VRT is if you want to change it from a van to a camper.
