Best EV for motorway commute?

    Hi All,

I am considering buying an EV and I'm a bit confused when it comes to range specifications.

I commute about 150 KM (round trip) daily and nearly all is motorway driving. There are charging points available at work so I plan to charge at work, but i want to allow for making the full round trip in case chargers aren't available.

What would you recommend as the best EV's for motorway driving at 120km/h which would be able to manage at least 150 KM on a singe charge (not inlcuding Tesla or i-Pace unfortunately :D)

I have been looking at the new BMW i3, eGolf, Leaf and Ioniq, but no sure any of these would have the range? Any other options?

Kia eNiro and Hyundai Kona EV both seem some way off being able to actually order and drive and I'm hoping to pick one up sooner.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Ioniq is made for the motorway with its efficiency at high speed

    Scrappage on them too

    26k Inc scrappage

Won't do better than that at the moment for a new EV

Thanks for the quick response! I had heard Ioniq was the most efficient but was worried about the smaller battery.

Would the Ioniq be able to handle this range comfortably do you think?

Others here would be better to advice on range

From what I have read they can do 170km in winter @ 120

    Summer even more

All of the cars you mention should do the 150km commute at 120km/h GPS speed but you might have to be a bit careful in eGolf and Leaf on a bad winters day

Never thought I'd say this but the new 2019 BMWi3 with its improved range and reduced price looks pretty good value for money

Go take any of these you fancy on a 24h test drive (it's free) and do your commute in them to get a feel for the cars

The Kona EV and the eNiro have a range far beyond the other cars you mention, so if you regularly do very big drives (well beyond the 150-200km the other cars can do, you should consider these too.)

In about a years time, there should be competitive offers from VW that offer better value for money than any of the above, but those cars ain't here yet...

Yes. More comfortably than the eGolf and the Leaf which both have far more battery capacity. At motorway speed aerodynamics play a big part and the Ioniq's coefficent of drag is lower than any of the other cars mentioned by a large margin.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't realise you could do a 24 hour test drive, that is definitely something I will look in to as it would be a great chance to test for sure. I can't decide if I like the look of the i3 or not, but if it has the range then I would definitely consider it! :)

I bought my EV the day after my 24h test drive. That was 2 years ago this month :)
