Medical expenses treatment

How do you treat medical expenses in a tax computation.

EG spent €1,000 on laser eye treatment, tax relief is 20%.

Is the relief a non refundable tax credit of €200 in a computation or do you deduct the full €1,000 from your Total Income to arrive at taxable income.

EG total income 60k less 1k, taxable income deemed 59k.

    Would greatly appreciate any advice.

The former, if it was the latter it would be at your marginal rate of 40%.
