Hi guys, appreciate thoughts on this. Timing belt done in a car with the Renault 1.5 dCi engine at around 63k kilometres, 4 years old. Mechanic didn't do the pump, said it was ok and didn't need replacing. Anyone have any experience with these - Is the water pump likely to be good for the next 4/5 years? If it does fail, will it be noticeable before it becomes catastrophic?

    Thanks in advance!

It may be ok or it may not, it was pretty poor not to change it though. Generally there will be some warning before it fails but not always

Not much of a mechanic if he's not changing such a cheap part that is only accessable by removing the belt!!! Ask him will he cover the labour when it inevitably goes?

When he put the new belt on he tensioned the belt more than the OE belt had become. Now the OE water pump that was doing ok with a rubber belt that had lost tension slightly has been put under pressure it's not used to. If you get 10k out of it I'd be very surprised.

Was this a main dealer or Joe Backstreet Blogs?

Did you ask him to change the pump or did he advise you to change it while he was changing the belt?

My money's on Joe Blogs and you wanting a cheap job.

To be fair its actually main dealers that are worse for not changing the pumps with a timing belt job

I don't agree, most reputable main dealers will recommend that you change the pump both to make an extra few euro for themselves and avoid claims afterwards, you will usually get the "may as well change the pump" while we are doing the belt" option
