Hi, as it's winter I haven't opened/closed my car windows lately. Yesterday, at a garda checkpoint, I tried to roll down the window and it wouldn't go down beyond 4 inches. Then it wouldn't go up! I brought it to my quick fix cheapie mechanic and he forced it up himself while I held the button. Happy out until, I forgot about my window situation and tried to open it again today to chat to my sister! Now, it won't go up inspite of trying to repeat what the mechanic had done yesterday. Any suggestions please!

This usually means the cable has begun to fray - and window may get stuck in some position as in your case .
The mechanic managed to get the window up by gripping it and pulling up the glass while you worked the motor .
However you often find this works just the once - the fraying cable gets jammed more fully next time leaving window in a stuck position .
Looks like you need a new window regulator .
