The cost including shipping @ 4.5% EU import duty then 23% Irish VAT on top.
If it comes by courier they will charge an admin fee of about 10-15 Euros.

Question on that. What if it was a second hand item in a private sale, do you still have to pay VAT?

    Yes.

I bought a speedmaster from Japan last year. You don’t go thru normal customs for high value items like that. Have to get a customs broker to pay the fee for you.
Painful hassle and expense but still worked out cheaper than buying in the EU.
I think over €2k and you have to use a customs broker.

If you buy privately secondhand and the package isn't marked X value. I guess you then risk customs opening and assigning a value and charge?

And if you under declare the value and it goes missing?

Good question. So let's say I buy a watch from the US privately and get it shipped via addresspal..I ask the poster to declare the value at say 500 Euro. Mark it as a gift. So I may end up paying 100 euro import fees . If I actually paid 2k for the watch . How will an post know to value the watch? I could have got a super bargain from a friend ... Or they may simply have gifted it to me..

It's kind of interesting. I've to send a watch back to steinhart in Germany and they have asked me to put value on parcel at 80 Euro.. I guess it could also get lost but they don't want to pay insurance on higher value item?

Horrible thought but what if 80 euro is the replacement value for Steinhart, some mark up

I'd be surprised if their margins were that high (even for parts, forgetting about labour costs)

Surely the ETA 2824-2 movement alone would cost them more than that to procure?

Well the watch is about 500. How much do they charge for labour etc.. I guess they make some profit to.. so to produce the watch I don't know but I'd imagine something like 150 euro?

Hmm quick Google suggests the eta movement would cost a watchmaker 250 euro

Maybe they lowering delcared value to avoid import fees or something and their insurance still covers?

I would have thought no import fees in eu though?

    Not Your Ornery Onager

The apparent lower value might result in a much higher probability of the package arriving at it's destination.
