    Hey all,
We've got a 3rd kid on the way and are looking to upgrade both our family cars to accommodate this. We currently have two cars:
    1. 2000 Toyota Corolla
    2. 151 VW Passat (CL 2.0L B8)

Wife is driving an hour each way to work every day, so we had generally kept the "good" car for her. I've a short run to the local train station, hence holding on to the Corolla for a long time.

We're looking at buying a 7 seater, and the Kodiaq is top of my list for value reasons. I also test-drove the new Santa Fe, and it's not too shabby. The extra 40bhp makes a noticeable difference. However, the main dilemma is whether to scrap the Corolla (Hyundai offering 4k scrappage for it, Skoda have no scrappage for the Kodiaq), and keep the Passat as our second car, or trade-in the Passat, and replace the Corolla ourselves.

The Corolla scrappage is very tempting (there's no way I'd get 4k for it myself), but the Santa Fe costs a good bit more, higher tax, higher running costs, so I feel like the 4k is really just off-setting the extra cost of the Santa Fe.

The Passat has 100k up on it, but hasn't given us a lick of trouble, and is very frugal. We're only being offered 14k for it by Skoda, and while Hyundai said they could stretch that to 15.5->16k, my preference is still for the Kodiaq (lower initial cost, lower tax, and lower fuel consumption).

Happy to hear of any alternatives. The 5008 looks nice, but I've also read good things about the Citroen C4 Grand as well.

Seat are launching the new Tarraco next month. It's pretty much the same car as the Kodiaq. Might be worth inquiring about prices as Seat may be eager to get a few of them on the road.

Unless you need 2 large cars to service and maintain then keep corolla and trade in passat. Makes best financial sense as you reduce expenditure by 15k on the new car.

Test drive and read on kodiaq and 5008 as both are highly rated. I'd probably look at diesel for them.

Compare pcp and hp and loans like credit union on all cars ré total cost of credit. Vw have good rates but mpv is competitive market place.

Credit union offers flexibility to pay off early.

I am looking at one of these but the dealers are fairly clueless at the moment...the just don’t have the information. There are a few launch editions landing next week, but the manual diesel is just over €48k!....I don’t think the dealers are even aware of what margins they have to work with yet. They are currently only available to order in manual petrol and diesel.

They have good spec but I was expecting them to be a bit cheaper. You can get a Tiguan Allspace at a significant discount at the moment too for the higher spec ones...the finance was 0% but this may have crept up to 1.9% recently. I have a really good offer of a highline automatic but prefer the design of Seat/Skoda.

If you're hoping to seat the 3 kids in the middle row with 3 car seats none of your options will accommodate you properly. Make sure you check your setup physically in the showroom with your seats etc.

Yeah, with the Kodiaq we popped the booster seat for the oldest into one of the two 3rd row seats, and it was perfect. You could still leave the second 3rd row seat down for shopping, etc. I spotted these as well:

Great idea, and would work perfectly for our eldest (who's 4 1/2) to get the 3 in the middle row.

Nissan are offering scrappage too so would you consider the x-trail up to €5,500 available.

Mazda have Eco Upgrade of up to €3000

Toyota have a trade in boosters up to €3,000 also.

It's apparently more expensive than the kodiaq?

you'll fit 3 isofix seats/seatbelt seats in the 5008 as the middle row is 3 distinct seats.

Huge advantage for going away, camping, cycling and taking other friends and family.

I spoke to our local VW/Seat dealer, and while he didn't have specific prices, he told me that they'll be pricing it lower than the Kodiaq.

Spoke with our local Seat dealer, and he said that the first 100 in the country will be launch spec, and the lower specs will only be available to order around April for delivery from (ballpark) July onwards.

Wife has kodiaq 1.4 dsg auto. Lowish spec. Friends bought the 5008 at the same time. 1.2 auto middle spec. The 5008 is a lovely machine. The middle spec is unreal. Time back we would have gone with the 5008. The Peugeot was slightly cheaper.

I've spent a week each with the Kodiaq and 5008. As nice as the 5008 is (really nice) I felt the Kodiaq just had a bit more of a quality feel about it.

I've done video reviews of both cars if you want to PM me I'll send you a link!

The current list price for a Tarraco Xcellence 7 seater is about €44,800-€45,200 depending on which metallic paint you go for. This is for a manual version. The equivalent Kodiaq Style seems to be the same price for an automatic version, which usually cost about €3k extra ? (no auto pricing for Seat yet). My local Seat dealer told me the prices before launch, and then they turned out to be about €2,800 more expensive when officially released!

I must give them a call. Do these figures include metallic paint and delivery because my figures above were confirmed by two dealers and the online configurator. (There is obviously a €2-2.5 margin discount that is applied to these but this is the same as Skoda anyway)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,047 ✭✭✭Truckermal

I cannot advise on the Peugeot OP but I know someone who couldn't wait for the Skoda and bought the Hyundai and have been plagued with breakdowns since especially gearbox/clutch issues! Also I seen three 161 Santa Fe in my local Skoda garage after being traded in so decide wisely!

@Bazz that Seat is mad money and only seems to be available in manual..

Afraid I was just going off the info they had on lying on salesman's desk for public while in there for something else.

On the road prices, no metallic.
    I was in fermoy

You could keep the Passat and just buy a multimac. If planning at staying at 3 then a good investment as it will open a lot bigger car choice going forward

Im not sure why you would buy a new car and then use to put huge mileage on it. Automatically increasing the depreciation. I would do it the other way. Plus if you move to 7 seater/Crossover expect your fuel costs to increase massively compared to the Passat

Which car is used mostly for the children?

The Corolla is used 4 out of 5 days for dropping the kids, but the Passat is used in the evening to pick them up, and and sort of trip outside the local area is 99% going to be the Passat. The MultiMac is interesting. Hadn't seen that before, but had heard a friend of a friend had got something that sounds very similar installed (had to get it done by a fitter, so very likely was the MultiMac)

I have one installed, it’s brill...4 seat version in eGolf

If it was me and I was buying a new car I would keep the mileage low on it
