They say they have landed on the dark side so we just have to take their word for it.

"China views this landing as just a steppingstone, as it also views its future manned lunar landing, since its long-term goal is to colonize the moon and use it as a vast supply of energy,"

The Chinese, a great bunch of lads.

It seems they’re on the way back now, turns out they brought windmills instead of solar panels.

There's so many Chinese, they probably just formed a human pyramid to get to it.

It was inevitable that China would start to catch up with the US and Russia in space exploration, nonetheless, quite an achievement. 祝贺

They reckon there’s a sh1tload of Helium 3 on the moon. Wouldn’t surprise me if the Chinese are mining it in the next few years.

It's a bit sneaky doing it on the side where we can't see what they are up to.

If they do find so much though, will they be able to land it back on Earth, or will they suffer perpetual flotation carrying it back? I guess they could try and counterbalance with a bit of Heavy Metal....

It's a big rock that's 25% of the earth's mass. So it's safe to say that there's a lot in the moon.

The main issue has always been (and still is) that using any of it is really difficult.

If you were to canoe 100km to a remote island and discover that there's actually a ****load of gold ore over there, what do you do? You can't carry a tonne of rocks 100km in a canoe to refine it back home.

You could build a rudimentary refinery on the island to extract the gold, but all you've got is a canoe. It would take lots of long and dangerous trips to carry enough equipment to begin refining the ore. And then you still have the issue of carrying the refined gold back home on your little canoe.

But technology is improving in this area, and once something starts, it will kick off a new race to develop better and better ways to mine materials in space. Various space treaties have asserted that nobody is allowed to take ownership of anything, so it'll be a proper free-for-all goldrush.

This article is from 2013.They seem to be on track to have man back on the moon by the mid 20’s.Also a very interesting quote from a Chinese professor that there could be enough Helium-3 on the Moon to power Earth for the next 10,000 years.I’d say Donny’s oil buddies won’t like to hear that.

Think of it this way. If we let China colonise the Moon, and then ship the whole Chinese population over there, it will leave room back here for the rest of us to spread out a bit more. Everyone wins

FFS just get a bigger boat with a motor on it!! They are readily available and with the amount of gold you have discovered you'll have no problem paying for it.

    Not convinced.
If there was that much helium it would have floated into space off years ago.

I imagine gas only "floats" until it rises above denser gases.
Gravity should still keep it in the atmosphere.

But it's probably bound to minerals or something.

The main reason for a long term presence on the moon is likely to extract water/fuel/materials from the moon so it becomes a temporary refueling station from earth. If you could extract metals from the lunar soil and 3d print parts there, that would be a huge cost saving to transporting everything from earth via hugely expensive rockets.

Helium3 is lightweight but it's still worth $40k per ounce.

With at least 1.1 million metric tons of helium-3 on the lunar surface's top soil (most in shaded/dark side areas).
One chap reckons x3 shuttle shipments per year would be enough to meet global energy demands
(pending availability of advanced fusion reactor programs).

More practically would be the discovery of water sources in the South Pole-Aitken Basin area for their future moon base.

Look forward to tasting moon beer as soon as the new overlords build a brewing distilery, on the dark side.

no, it's barely 1% the mass.

It's trapped in the rocks, just like on earth, we have radon etc. trapped in rocks.

So why arent the rocks floating off like a balloon does when you trap helium in it?

There's a limited supply of Helium,we really shouldn't be putting it in balloons.

    Also rock heavy.

There is no dark side in the moon, really. Matter of fact, it's all dark. The only thing that makes it look light is the sun.
