I’ve been putting in new handling yard for cattle and can’t make my mind up on what headgate and the final section of the crush, I wit down to a Morris type gate or acondon auto.. both with a head scoop. I was kinda fixed on the Morris type until I seen the auto one in action which in my mind is far better designed that a lot of the auto ones available. Can I get any of your opinions on what is the best out there. I think I have finalized what way I’ll do the last stage just before it as I’ve left in vet gate sections and a Caesarian section too with a fold down side step but I want to make sure I’ve it nailed down right so I’ve no changing down the line. Could I get opinions or even better photos of setups or even a wish list of things people would want or need on Theres if they could. Ps I won’t be using it for calving that often as I’ve designated calving pens but I’ve a couple of pb’s that just get a slight bit temperamental and the way I’ve the rest of the crush set up they have no option but go down it without me being pinned to wall somewhere.

Look up gerry 6420 cattle work I think it is. Very handy set up. I'd say it's expensive but prob money well spent. You could just add a calving gate.

Have to get the calving gate made, I want to incorporate the backing bar restrictions and none of the existing ones will marry with the way I want the opposite side, I’d also rather the top rail on the calving gates are gone as they are usually in the way.

Just building a new handling pen put in the Barrett engerineering gate. Took a bit of head scratching to put it in but I think it will be the Businesd I can lock the gate while standing at the animals tail encouraging them forward. I also put a crush gate directly befind the first animal that is caught in the head gate. It will close in front of the second animal stopping them coming forward which allow AI or castration etc. I put a head scoop on as well. I want all the work done at the head gate and nothing back the crush

I’ve the small gates at the back of it in. I put one on each side swung opposites so one closes the front if needs be the other closes behind do it creates a walk through the crush. I presume if you’ve the handle to the back you went with the Morris type with cage or the three leaf option? What panels did you work with behind the crush? Have you pics?

Barret one works like the Morris one. Niall barett told me that cattle won’t go into the cage after a while and people are taking the cages out. So I went with the option of the plates on the head gate. He uses very heavy steel in his one. The reason I went with barrets, made in ireland cheaper and I thought it was better than Morris. I am only up the shed at night but I will get some photos at the weekend if that suits. Head scoop was very good value as well with them

Used to have a fully automatic Nugent head gate. Well made but a pig of a thing. I definitely couldn't recommend it. You would want mental cattle to close it and the second one in the crush definitely won't close it. The cemi auto ones are better I'd say but that Morris type is the cats pajamas.

We have the Nugent Universal Headlocking Gate with Headscoop on the crush and have to put up a crush on the out-farm in the next few weeks, we're going to put in the same head gate & set it up for the Headscoop but won't bother putting one on it for the minute as it will only be used for testing & the odd injection & we can bring the Headscoop from the home farm over if dosing or any big job. Will put the Condon anti backing bar on it.

Getting the same guy to make the new crush & pens as very pleased at how this one works.

Had to put two anti backing bars on the crush because of where the pillar was as we are calf to finished beef enterprise so have all different sizes of animals in the crush, will watch for this on the new crush but usually only have forward stores on the outfarm.

Perfect Thanks I wasn’t sure how to add a link

Good job Cathal. I see one flaw is with the spuds you’ve welded up to put a bar into. I’ve these on a shoot on an outfarm and I regularly have to try pry cattle’s heads out over them and they have a habit of wedging that soft spot under their head in it.
